Summertime and the FD...?
This is the first summer for my car...and i'm just really wondering
How do you guys do it in 90+ with no A/C?!
Also, i was getting high temps when it'd be like mid 80s outside----won't mid 90 degree temperatures make my car run even hotter?
i have the FC thermoswitch, koyo radiator, downpipe blah blah---however, i'm not seeing temps i thought i would be...i do however have an FMIC--does it affect temps that much?
thanks in advance

104 here in the valley, no A/C, SMIC, alum radiator and I'm seeing temps in the 90-101 range (via pfc and guage). Not too worried, however. that's within normal operating temperature.
A FMIC will affect cooling. Higher temperatures will make not really make your car run THAT much hotter... it will heat up faster. It will only marginally increase your temps (say +/- 5-7 degrees).
You could always get a vented hood if you're too concerned with underhood temps. Increasing air flow is what makes a car run cooler (or if you get a pfc and have a friend datalogit so the fans turn on at lower temps).

Yes! Search for other posts I made on that topic if you want to read about my experiences.

Probably with clenched buttocks and a brave stare.
Removing AC from a street car is and always was a silly fetish. And gives about the same usable performance improvement as a huge wing.
If your cooling system is working properly, 90F+ should not be much of an issue. Car will probably run a little hotter.

I drive my FD w/o AC when its 100 degrees outside, but let me tell you, it sucks. If you can deal with a sweaty back then you may be ok.
Just bust those windows open and drive fast, thats about all you can do.

I need to recharge my AC, so currently i have no AC in the GT-R. I roll down both windows.
I know its not an FD, but like FDs, the GT-R has a dendency to run really hot too. I try to stay out the boost in the 100 + weather because the oil temps tend to go up (Factory temp guage).
During mornings, and nights i tend to get on the gas more, and the car likes cooler weather. I drive it everyday so I adapt my driving to the car. Eventually cooling mods are coming, so is an AC Charge and a new fan clutch motor.

Constant threat
I just don't drive my FD in the summer much. An occasional night time blast up my favorite road. And my a/c works perfect...it will freeze you out.
Can't imagine no a/c.......
moconner summed it up perfect.

You shouldnt worry about water temps untill they get over 105c really. If you have a PFC you can get it modded to have the fans come on early. I got rid of my A/C and I use the button for it to turn on my second fan if it starts getting to hot. A/C is for baby's lol just role down the window crack the sun roof and enjoy the drive.... Tinted Windows help a little.

But what happen when you are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and the sun is beaten on you? Then you probably wish your a.c is working. Also the temp do rise the trick is to put the park light on which put a load on the car and the fan kick's in around 210 or less I believe. Another thinp I notice today in the heat 89 degree (NYC) oil temp gauge max out at 250 degree, I did beat on the car when I have open road but for the majority of my trip I spend in traffic, after over 3 hours plus driving my oil temp max out. I should metion that I have the R-1 oil cooler setup, and replica mazdaspeed hood. Know I prove to myself that Factory oil coolers is not good enough in hot temp.

I have an R1 with no sunroof, which is the worst for summer because the air doesn't blow out. Since I daily drive my FD, which has no A/C with a black interior, it gets ridiculously hot. Your best bet is to park under shade, keep windows slightly down and as mentioned, drive fast.
I'm doing a consistent 81 Celsius and up to 85 in the hottest weather sitting in traffic thanks to a fan mod, evan's coolant and the biggest v-mount that can possibly fit under the hood of this car. The only thing that really gets to me is that I have the air pump removed and it smells AWFUL.

My engine oil (220 F, measured in oil pan) and water (about 90 C on PFC commander, 200 F at thermostat housing), temps are just fine and it's 104 F today where I'm at.
One thing that I don't like to see however is the air temps, as measured by the stock IAT sensor. I went to Denny's this morning, had a "heart attack slam" (you can make your own grand slam now ), got back in my car and fired it up. Air temp = 74 C (which is about 165 F, holy crap). Needless to say I'm not driving my car too hard lately. Just remember that the stupid IAT sensor in the stock location in the UIM heat soaks like crazy, falsely telling the ECU that the intake charge is less dense than it really is therefore sometimes leaning out your fuel delivery (on stock ECU), and if you fire up the car on a heat soaked engine you ought to drive the car around nicely for a bit before you decide to boost.
Not too sure what the other folks who have FDs who live in hot climates do about this other than drive the car easy when it's blazing hot outside. There's plenty of FD owners in Texas, Southern CA, Arizona, and even some in Hawaii. I wonder what they do about the heat?

I have a base model with no sunroof and for the first 6 months I had the car it didn't blow cold at all. Turned out I had huge leak underneath the car that leaked all of my freon out. Took 3 weeks to figure out where it was and get it fixed but now I am driving with the windows up for a change and it's so cold that I usually only have to use setting #1 because it keeps the car nice and cool for me. Living in Florida without a/c was really really painful. I used to get into my car and it felt like I was walking into hell...

I went on a "cruise" yesterday with my local car club. It was over 100 degrees. Going up a long winding hill ( ok, racing up the long hill ), my engine temps started to creep over 220. Oil temp was at 260 (measured in the pan). While 220 certainly isn't overheating, I didn't want it to get any hotter. I decided to back off to let it cool down a little. I don't think I would have had to do that if it were 80 degrees outside. Ambient temperatures can make a big difference when you are driving the car hard.
I do have AC, but didn't use it for fear of higher temps, and of course, loss of a little power .

yeah, ive gotten to 220 after a loong uphill drag, it freaked me out, pulled over for a few minutes then inched my way a few more blocks to my destination.
its finally cooling down here in LA---only 83 today.
ive always driven with my parking lights on regardless (i just thinks it looks cool lol), and yeah i have the FC thermoswitch taht kicks the fans on several degrees earlier.
looks like i wont need to worry too much---i think i have a (nother) coolant leak though, noticed a small spot under the car (waiting on my 99 spec tray)
thanks for all the input guys, not nearly as scared as i was before
now if i can just get my A/C worked out.........

In the 100+ degree weather, my car would run pretty cool (89c-94c) but one day my ast hose ripped and my car started to heat up quick. I turned it off and let it cool down, fixed it and that was that. now my temps are getting pretty hot today in cooler weather. I toped off/burped the system. I hit 105c in normal driving. Weird how these things happen. Ima look into a new t-stat.
I have A/C, SMIC, Koyo, and Re-medy waterpump btw.

Is the 90C freeway speeds or in traffic. If in traffic, how's everyone's engine temps so low? Mine registers 109-110 in traffic on a hot day which converts to about 228 F
I also got the larger sized Koyo radiator, but that's about all the changes in terms of cooling.

The end of an era

Yeah, Summer is ridiculous on our cars. This last Friday I was coming home from work (~1 mile away from home), my AC was blasting and my temp gauge started to climb up, I shut off the AC, blasted the heater (1:00 PM!!) and coasted it home. I looked under my FD, my end tanks SPLIT!!! (Only ~60k miles on the rad too) There was coolant pouring everywhere. Luckily she only got to about 3/4 before I shut her off. Luckily I got my Koyo a few days prior, so I installed that, fixed my aftermarket temp gauge. Now I have the AC blasted and in ~100* weather and I'm seeing ~190* on the highway, ~200* in the city. FWIW I'm running a 70-30 mixture of coolant/distilled water.

I drove my car this weekend at ~3pm, it was about 112* out and no a/c. It seriously feels like you just jumped into an oven.. However, temps are stable at 185-190 even when boosting, gotta love v-mounts..
