Suggestions to resurrect a 5year old RX7
My FD has been garaged kept for 5year, ... this year I have been concentratiing on getting it back on the road. Hopefully to this the bodyshop for paint this winter and hitting the road by spring 2011.
In short, I abandoned my car in 05 after upgrading to a FMIC and bigger radiator and other minor upgrades of which I having been trying to piece back together. This past weekend I was able to drain out the 15gal of old gas that has been in the tank.
Now I'm wondering if I should drain all the other fluids, coolant and oil, that has been sitting in it. They are all new fluids when I put it in back in 05 and from what I can remember, I haven't crank the motor after putting them in.
Do you all think the fluids will be fine when I put in fresh gas? Anything else I should do before I crank the motor? I just want to make sure everything cranks up without any problems.

only drain the fluids when you are ready to crank the motor.
If i were you, id buy DOUBLE the amount of tranny and engine oil.... pour the new stuff in, let the motor circulate it and warm up to operating temps, and then shut it off and let it cool for 30min and then drain and fill again.
as for the tranny, you're going to have to drive the car around the block a few times to get the tranny to circulate the oil.
for coolant, i would flush it, pour distilled water with prestone flush(the one for neglected systems) and drive the car for a few days while the stuff works its magic. then flush it with distilled water again and then fill it up with 50/50 mix.
as for the fuel being there i wouldnt know what to tell ya. i never had a car sit for that long.
i would at least try taking a few gals of 93 and see if the car starts up.
if its rough, you're just gonna have to let it run its course until the old fuel gets diluted with the new fuel..... then you'll have to change the fuel filter and possibly even the pump

My suggestion would be to pull the uim and then pull the injectors and send them to be cleaned; while your under there giving the rats nest a once over is not a bad idea, check the fuel pulsation dampener, fpr and various fuel and water hoses concealed by the uim would be worthwhile. Its also not a bad idea checking the entire intake tract for creepy crawlies ( they get everywhere ).
Good luck.
Good luck.

For just starting the car, I would only bother with the fuel (which it sounds like you have done already). I would probably use some MMO in the combustion chambers before cranking it. Grab a bottle of BK 44k for your first tank of gas:

Once you get the car started and running, then go ahead and flush the coolant and oil. I wouldn't bother with the diff and tranny if you put those in new before the car went into storage.

I would be scared to start a car after that long. Then again, only one way to get it back on the road! Good luck with everything, mines been sitting about 6 months now.. It will probably be another 3 years before i get it on the road again.

I've been down this road before and after draining the tank and putting fresh gas and plugs mine fired right up and ran like a champ. Of course I did hand turn the engine over and did put some oil, or Marvel Mystery Oil down the into the intake ports. A little premix might not be a bad idea either.

Haha, my heart beats faster every time I think about cranking it. Good luck on your resting period for your FD, if you can get it back sooner, do it...I'm not looking forward to wrestling with this FD if its going to have some issues

I'm getting back into this, but what did you do to hand turn the engine? And did you do anything with the coolant? I hate doing coolant flush since its super messy and tedious (air bubbles and crap)

Taking the time to do what's recommended will help prevent even worse time (and money) killing problems down the road.
To hand turn it just get a long breaker bar and a 19mm socket to rotate the main pulley bolt, which turns the rotors inside.
