I was driving my car and I heard a loud clap like something from the road flew up and hit my car. I kept driving. Parked at restaurant. Ate. Came out to drive away. Put it in reverse...wait, there is no reverse...and now come to think of it theres no 5th either. the stickshift can make the motions into 5th and reverse but its like the gears been taken clean out of the tranny. So I drive home in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, all seem to be working fine. i try and finnagle my way into 5th and end up getting it stuck in 5th gear and now i can't get it out! Let me tell you a start in 5th gear is hell on the clutch!

Anyway, i've gotten stuck in a gear before on my old datsun 310 and managed to get it out and ran the car another 30K miles without problem. I'm hoping this is that problem, however I realize it is probably a tranny rebuild.

Any chance anyone else had this problem. Searched the archives, most seem to address 5th gear synchro problems, which this is not.

I posted a while back about the LOUD pop that I though was maybe backfire but I actually FELT it in the car. I just wrote it off as somthing came up from the road and hit my car.

About a week or more later.... my car will NOT go into gear.

It will go into ANY gear when the car is off... but not when it's running. I'm now in the process of replacing the clutch and flywheel and going to have the trannys 5th gear syncros fixed (either myself or somwhere else). I had the grinding in the 5th gear before also.

I should have the tranny down.... maybe..... saturday? If not then it will have to be last next week (have a convention in cali sun-wed) When I get it down I will know if the clutch actually went.... or if it's somthing w/ the tranny.

 

5th and reverse are on the same shift hub so that makes sense why you couldn't get in either. The 5th shift fork must be ok if you got in. Probabley you have broken the synchro ring, innercone or outer cone. And because they are ouut of line you will not be able to get out of 5th except with luck. Try jacking up the back of the car and have a buddy turn the rear wheels back and forth, jerk them, and try to work it out of gear. Good luck. Either way, you need some tranny work.

 

thanks for the info guys...5th gear synchro it may be....i missed a shift to 3rd the other day but i checked to make sure i could get 5th right after and i could. perhaps it took a few days to work itself loose.
