Strong smoke smell on cold start
I have recently purchased my 93 rx-7, its has 80,000 miles on the car, it had a new engine installed about 2500 miles ago (still has original turbos). When I start the car up in the morning i get this really strong exhaust smell and a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. I let the car idle for about 5 minutes everytime i start it cold. I continue to get a lot of exhaust smoke until i drive it for a minute or so, then it clears, also sometimes i can smell gas when i drive the car. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my car, other than this it runs great.

the smoke is white like a normal exhaust smoke, but there is a lot of it, it is so bad sometimes that it can tear your eyes. It really just smells like burning gas. Could it be that it is just running too rich, and if so what kind of problems could this cause to the car?

Sounds like carbon build up in the engine thats burning off or could be that you are running too rich. I've had the same problem, do you shut off your engine after driving for a short time often? Sometimes can cause flooding and build up deposits.

If it is carbon build up, isnt that caused by running too high an octane rating or can it be caused by running too rich. When i drive in the car i dont usually drive for too short a period of time, being that this is just my nice weather car i usually take it out for decent period of time and not just to run to the store. Anyways, if this is the problem, should i be worried about things major things going wrong with the car?

Hi,
I read that if your car puffs out white smoke, it's
"...means that the engine is getting water/antifreeze into the combustion chamber (predicting engine death). A puff of black/brown smoke usually means the car isn't burning all of the fuel going in. This rich condition is probably nothing to be worried and may mean that the car just needs is a tune-up. Blue smoke is burning oil, which is a bad sign."

im sorry, i didnt mean white smoke, it has no coolent leak or anything like that, it is just normal exhaust, but much more of it. Most people that i have let check out the car say that it is running rich. I was mostly worried about this, but if they say it is nothing to worry about, then i am relieved. thanks for all the help, guys.

Like SWAT81 mentioned, I had a series of several days where my car was started, moved, started, moved, etc. The car smoked a lot with a strong fuel smell to the exhaust. It went away after a longer drive.
My guess is it had something to do with the cat not getting hot enough to burn off the pollutants.
Do you have a cat with airpump hooked up and working?
Are you overflowing coolant (o-ring issue)? Has the car been overheated?

im not really sure about the cat with an airpump, i dont know too much about the car besides what i read about at forums and such, i will definately look into the possibility of the cat causing it. from what i know the car has not been over heated. ive had it for almost a month now and havent had any heat problem ( i have this bad *** hood that has pretty decent sized vents on it, i think that might have something to do with it not overheating) that and the fact that i havent had any hot weather, so all the air going in is pretty cool. The coolent is at the correct level so i dont think that is the problem, thank you again for the help
