strange smoke.....turbos gone bad or what ??
Well......I'm up and running after many months......(9). Now hear is mi problema. On my last engine while it was still running well I was getting this cycle of smoke coming out of my exhaust. It is strange.....it will idle perfectly clear for a few minutes........then a minute of a large cloud of blueish smoke....then go away again for another few minutes. A few months after I noticed this smoke problem my engine went out due to a coolant seal failure. Now my rebuilt engine is in and it will idle for an hour perfectly clear then all of the sudden that cycle of smoke is back ! Same smoke pattern as described last time around. What do you guys think it is ? Could it possibly be my turbos leaking oil somehwere ? There is no clear leak anywhere but I do remember seeing my intake box covered with more oil than usual last time around with this same problem. I have not yet checked the box this time to see what kind of oil residue is in there. Any insight on this is appreciated. Maybe someone out there has experienced this as well.

Check your PCV system. There are 2 lines in the 93-94 system. And one in the 95. Maybe try removing the oil filler cap if you are just doing an idle test. If there is a problem with this system (like a bad valve or bad modification) you will get crankcase pressure buildup which will blow oil out your turbo seals (even if they are brand new).

Sounds like the carbon seals inside the turbine housings have finally given up. You need new turbos, dood. They've obviously had a long life, 105K miles. I had the same issue last year ... sucks. My advice to you is not to go the cheap route with rebuilds and/or used turbos. Go new ... you won't regret it.

The turbos will not be covered in oil. The compressor housings get so hot, that almost all the oil will get burned off immediately. The oil blowby is small ... we're talking droplets. It doesn't take much to cause all that smoke. If the blowby was THAT big, the turbos wouldn't operate at all.
That huge crack in the exhaust housing is very bad.

my turbos were not grossly covered in oil...like redrotor said the heat buns them off....what i did notice was the shaft play....i had bought a used set from the forum while i save for the gt35/40 this winter or next year....supposedly these babies have about 30 on them....very little shaftplay compared to my old turbos...but i think my problem was the seals b/c i had small puddles of oil when i drove my car....get home wipe the oil off and the next time more oil..... i always smoked on and off and esp at wot...had compression test at kdr was in the nines or high eights what ever that means but dave said my reman is still strong...so no coolant problems....no coolant on the floor ...just changed my radiator about two monhts ago...so it's the seals on the turbos... the oil lines were dry no leaks....test drove it yesterday with the turbos on...smoked at start up and mad smoke later on ..hehe i didn't have a gasket for the downpipe...but once the oil burned off about ten minutes there was no smoke...turbos pulled really strong...enuf for me to feel the difference.. i had only dynoed about 294 at kdr on a dynojet with my old turbos....they were leaking oil then too....i am assuming i should have more now. good luck....

Thanks Redrotor and FDVirgin !! Hopefully it is just the turbos like you guys think. I will continue to watch my car very closely until the 500 mile mark. If it is in fact my turbos and not anything more serious I will look for a set of J-spec turbos. I already checked my coolant level and no loss.......also no champagne bubbles of death. But, you can never rule anything out with these damn cars hehe ! Will update this thread in a week or so.

Well.......I just pulled all four plugs. Front had oil on them......enough to get my index finger covered pretty good. The rears were dry but were pretty black for only 600 miles of driving. So........smoke is def. oil and it appears to be the turbos.
