strange oil pressure readings?

My oil pressure gauge has been reading some low numbers lately and I was wondering if it's the gauge or a legitimate problem.
Normally my car reads about 30 psi (I think that's the units on the gauge). at idle or low throttle and 60 psi at full throttle.
Every once in a while now, I notice my gauge just sitting at around 5 psi and not even moving if I get on the throttle. The car drives completely fine when this happens. There are no other symptoms. After I shut off the car and start it back up sometime latter, everything is fine again.
1) Do these gauges typically fail (72k on the car)?
2) Could it be the sensor?
3) What other symptoms would I notice if my oil pressure was really that low?
Thanks
