Strange music
Strange music
Ok, I've read all about the functional side of the FD on this site. Did a lot of searching as well. But something surprised me last night.
I was out on the main drag, crusing along, with all the kids mouths drooling, wanting to race... gosh I'm 50, ya know. Beyond all that. But anyway, this kid pulls up with this modded Eclipse. He gives me a thumbs up - I'm doing 40 in a 45 zone, and he guns it and shifts from second to to third to fourth and each time he shifts, I hear his turbo, but then there is this strange shriek at the end of the shift. No gears stripping, but tt sort of sounds like something is venting from the turbo directly into the atmosphere. My wife said it sounded kinda cool.
What is doing that? Anybody doing that with an RX-7? Is it functional, or just for auditory show?

They probably have an aftermarket blow-off valve, which is mad eto make extra loud noise. But your stock BOV can make a similar noise, if you vent it to the atmosphere. Right now it is ported back into your airbox, and that keeps it quiet. There is no performance benefit from this, just the noise.
Its a blow off valve. Your Rx-7 already has two of them, but they are vented into the airbox so you cannot hear them. The stock ones arent as loud as aftermarket ones and they kind of sound like a dieing swans last breath. If you want to get aftermarket ones you can, they will be louder, but will offer no performance gain over the stock ones.

Hey, thanks. I now have something to search for. I've seen discussions of BOVs. I just assumed it was something that prevented excess pressure buildup in the intake/exhaust system, much like BOVs on steam locomotives or home hot water heaters. LOL.
