strange hum/vibration on pull away

guys,

First off car spec:

70k on standard motor and tranny, no work done except vac hose job and apexi filters.

When i pull away in first gear slowly, i get a very strange vibration and a humming noise (almost like a very very low pitch squeal, if you can imagine that) every now and then...it only occurs at low speed and occurs with clutch up or down. The noise sounds and feels like its coming from the transmission tunnel. IT does not make it constantly either, i will pull away and if i let it cruise at a constant speed i get a rhythmic "murrrrr......murrr......murrrr" sound accompanied by vibrations from the tunnel, even with clutch down.

Does anyone know what this could be or what i should check? car engages all gears fine and smoothly, clutch does not slip or anyhting.

It basically sounds like it could be coming from a bearing on the prop shaft or something, but i dont know how they go together so cant think what would cause it.

Also, when driving earlier - i gave the car a bit of a boot up a hill (20mph up to 90mph) and noticed there was a little steam/smoke coming through the two side air vents. I had AC on and fan speed at 1. It was only a small amount of smoke, car temps were normal.

I had just washed the car, and filled it with oil. Im thinking either water evaporating on something or overfilling with oil maybe? the smoke didnt seem to smell, but i didnt get a chance to really sniff it...as it only happened for about 5 seconds. Car did not smell inside afterwards. I stopped and opened the bonnet, didnt notice anything untoward, i also looked under the car and didnt notice anything untoward.

I dont think the smoking is related to the noise, as the car has been making the noise for a while but this is the first time it has EVER smoked thorugh the air vents...just thought id mention it though just incase its relevant.

Thanks guys!

Don't have a clue on the vibration. But, just a guess - maybe something (heat shield, etc.) is rubbing on the driveshaft, etc., and vibrating when it does.

The steam/smoke is just condensation in the air cooled by the AC. That's normal, especially in damp weather, or when water has entered the air intake vents.

That's why I took mine out.

As for the vibration...output shaft bearing?

I guess you could also have a bad U-joint...

Why should i never drive it with AC on? i drive it with AC on all the time.

Can anyone think of a way to test the bearing? i suppose im just going to have to get under the car...

Its strange, because the car seems fine and dandy, lovely and smooth at 155 on my private test track this morning ???

Is this the same as the pilot bearing?
