Of course it depends on shock loading, grip and how much you abuse it. Once you are running ~1.2+ bar of boost (twins or single), if you have decent tyres (ie r-compound semi slicks or drag radials) and you do drag racing or burnouts I believe you are in the 'danger zone'.

At those power levels, you'll have NO traction and, if you CAN get traction, you'll probably be breaking other stuff first.

Agreeing with others.
You can destroy a tranny with 300whp if you abuse it. As you approach 500whp, the drivetrain reaches its limit. Of course, traction and use play a big role here. If you limit your WOT to 4th gear pulls and keep decent tires on it, you will be fine. When you start launching the car, banging through the gears, and getting good grip in 1-3rd gear than you will have issues with the transmission, axles, and diff.
I run 285's in the rear with a "decent" tire. 1-2nd are useless at WOT, and 3rd finds traction sometimes. I have Hankook Evo12's and they are an "ok" summer tire. As my power went up, I decided to not get the best tires for this reason. Breaking them loose helps save shock on the drive-train.
Ultimately, if you want to put big power down a T56 tranny, upgraded diff, and upgraded axles are in order.
And yeah, granny shifting is OK
