Stock Sequantial turbocharger rebuilder
Can anyone recomend a reasonaly priced good turborcharger rebuilder. Mine is leaving a blue cloud of smoke. When I start it up, it is worse, then improves when run for awhile. I am getting no boost, and am getting a whining sound. I haven't removed it yet.

Most people will tell you that stock turbo rebuilds are generally not attempted because it is hard to find parts and harder to discern between good core parts and warped/beyond spec bearing housings. Most places won't even bother with it and even fewer individuals do.
The main problem with rebuilding the stock twins seems to be oil leakage from the hot -side seal because of warpage and improper seal parts from the supplier. If your set is already leaking from there, I would imagine it's not a great core.
If you just want a set that works right now, get low mile used.
Also, make sure it's the turbos before you do anything else... pull off the intake and feel the the turbines for free movement and excessive shaft play. Burning oil can also be from the oil control rings and seals. The low boost could be from a blown coupler.

You can always try emailing Bryan at BNR supercars, bnrsupercars@aol.com. He may rebuild them for you, but I believe he stopped messing with the stock twins due to the problems mentioned above.

Thanks for the replies, they both seem like good advice. I would like to have them repaired if possible and practical. I have recently had the engine replaced with a factory remanufactured version. I am not out to develop more performance, just to get it working like it was designed to do. A dealer wants $3500. for a new replacement, and $400. for labor. I plan on removing them myself with my son's help. I absolutely will not pay their prices.

$400 for labor isn't that bad, IF they do it right. With a dealer, you have about a 1% chance of that happening on an FD sequential twin turbo R&R.
Take a good look at those Efini twins from www.rx7.com----I recently installed a set for a customer and he was extremely happy with their performance, along with the new engine.

Yeah, I was in your shoes not too long ago, but I have this problem with having to do things myself hehe. The quality of the twins that I built has yet to be determined, but they sure do look nice I refreshed a couple nice cores that I inspected under magnification and slapped on a couple low mile manifolds.

I have 10k on my rebuild from 2004. A local fuel injector & turbo rebuilder catering to the diesel industry having over 30 years experience and an excellent reputation. Smart guy with grey hairs. Showed me his shop, showed housings he could/wouldn't repair.
The cost was about $950 incl tax. the finished product looked fabulous, no end play, repainted, packaged. I'm sure they ship.

Scott at www.turbosdirect.com will rebuild if you have a good core. Yes they are hard to find if yours is not.

I am trying to get all options to get my turbocharger working or replacement. Alexdimen, did you rebuild your turbocharger yourself, if so is it working properly, where did you get the rebuild parts? How difficult was the job, would you reccomend it? I have read a thread that someone tried to rebuild there turbo, only to find it didn't work properly. They used a kit from Tubo City.

Call them to do the work. They can also identify what your problems are and fix the car right. Their prices are in-line with any other mechanic but you know they have tons of RX-7 knowledge. If the turbos are bad - buy a set of low milage turbos from someone in the for sale section here on the forum and have KD do the install.

I'm pretty sure B&D balances their turbos, on my rebuild he had to get a turbine out of West Virginia, something hit the fins. (but I was getting good boost) give him a call, interview them.
When should wastegates be ported? I just replaced a failed stock cat with a highflow.

Actually the kits are a problem. They all come from the same place (there is only one manufacturer that sells the rebuild kits) and the parts are hit or miss. Sometimes they spec out properly but typically they dont. No matter where you have them rebuilt at they will use that same kit. Then you mix that with the fact that typically the cores are not in spec enough to rebuild or are marginal and that all mixes together to create a very low chance that they will be worth a damn and last.

There are some very low mileage turbos for sale for under $1k that will last on average much longer than a rebuild. That's probably the best value and lowest risk way to go.

I gave B&D a call their correct number is 301-899-1626, I also had some biodiesel questions for him. I believe the stock turbo's are hitachis, He (Gibby) says he would of probably of gotten a kit from Turbo International. but many of his rebuilds for the trucks he's pulling seals and bearings off his shelf (select parts). He put the impetus of failure on either the rebuilder or other car problems (like too much crankcase pressure).
He does balance every turbo that leaves his shop. 1 year non-racing warranty, he says he'll know.
