He does balance every turbo that leaves his shop. 1 year non-racing warranty, he says he'll know.
Yep, Hitachi HT12's. When he said it is mostly the builder's fault for seal failures, was he referring to these Hitachis or to more common builds?

I got the turbocharger out ot the FD yesterday, and there was a lot of oil in the air ducts. The seals were leaking very badly. I now have to decide my next plan of attack. I may get a kit and rebuild it myself, or I may have shop do it. You all have given me some good points, and recomendations on a rebuilder. Another I noticed that the vacuum hoses were very brittle and should be replaced. What do you think is the best type, and a good place to get them. I guess they take 4mm and 6mm size. I will probably replace as many as i can possibly reach without tearing any more off the engine. To get the turbo out I had to remove a lot of items. Tough to do with the engine in the car. Well anyways this is where I am at the moment, I am not going to rush it, as I don't need it for daily transportation. Thanks for your response.

Look under "vacuum hose" in the links here:

I also wrote about my vacuum hose adventure here:

I suggest you get a kit of good quality silicone. There is some less durable silicone out there - at the moment I suggest baker precision or hightempsilicone.com

The reason I'm reading this thread is because I think my second turbo just let go.

I will have to wait till tomorrow to know for sure, but the car wouldn't crank. I took out the rear plug and it was wet with oil and gas. I then got her started. She smoked alot and started sizzling near the sec turbo.

These were my original turbos that I had rebuilt 113,000 miles ago by Don's turbo service in Oregon. I will call him next week to talk about another rebuild. He said he uses Viton oil seals and gets the balancing down to Zero @ 1 inch from center. His exact words were they will be better than Hitachi could ever do. I can't complain I got perfect 10-8-10 boost for 110,000 miles.

later...Scott
