Is it just me or does anyone else notice their stock hood flexing at 100mph?

 

Flexing no. But I just drove in another fd and noticed his stock hood moved a bit. Mine doesn't budge ( or not that I noticed ). I aaumed its because he had hood shocks on his.

 

Mine bounces up and down to a small degree 60mph+

 

Mine moves a bit as well.

i'm too short to see my hood move

 

I was never looking for it, but there was never enough movement to catch my eye at speeds up to 160 mph. Stock hood, stock latching mechanism.

 

Before anyone adjusts their hood latch, check the rubber bumpers. There are four of them toward the front of the hood. Apparently they can shrink a bit...probably from age and heat. The two just behind the headlights on my car were loose. I shimmed them up about 3/16" of an inch with some left-over pieces of rubber I had laying around and bit of clear silicone to hold them in place. It's virtually invisible and cured the shake I saw at highway speeds without having to draw the hood down further with the latch.

I have had to adjust these on almost every vehicle I have owned to eliminate hood movement at speed.

I HIGHLY recommend blocking off the tube/coupler between your PFS IC duct and intake box for it's source of air. Then cut out a hole and one inch wide slit down the passenger side bottom of the PFS air box for it's new source of air.

The issue is that the intakes for the turbos create a lot of vacuum in the box with that small opening on the duct, causing it to pull air, not only from in front of the duct but also back through the IC from the low pressure side behind it. This causes your IATs to be higher than they need to be. Peter Farrell wasn't the brightest nor did he care that much. This setup was meant to be compact, easy, pretty, make money and perform..."well". And, it does. But this design of pulling the intake air source from the IC duct is a bad one to say the least.

I know you track your car a lot Jim, I guarantee you that you'll see cooler IATs if you do what I am telling you to. I have done a lot of testing on this!

Off-topic, but......
Both have already been done...sort of.
I have modified/opened up the bottom of the PFS box to source air from the nose. The intake tube has been screened, but NOT blocked completely. Around town IATs were in the 42 to 44 C.(108 to 111 F.) area where I live a couple of weeks ago. This is when ambient was pushing 36 to 37 C. (96 to 98 F). Recovery after hard boost was decent as well. I'm satisfied with that until I get off my lazy butt and get this AI system installed.
If I felt the need to block off duct tube completely, I think I'd move to something like an M2 intake first.

Great tip on how to adjust the hood. I will check that once I take ownership of my new ride.

 

I too will check this. My hood was squeaking after driving it for awhile. I lubed the latch and it would stop breifly. I will now check my hood grommets.

 

Thanks dude, Your suggestion fixed my hood flex. I wound 16 guage wire underneath the stoppers and it worked as you said it would

Mine has always moved a bit on the track too. Even had people comment on if it was normal. Can't we just replace those with new ones?

I found that adding to my rubber hood rests didn't help. The problem was that the latch had worn a groove into the hook on the hood. I needed move my latch down a couple mm. Put some antiseize on it to alleviate the wear and squeaking too.

I have a little of the same groove issue, but not enough to cause problems. I keep it greased.
As long as it doesn't suck the hood down too much no worries. But I wonder if a little weld could be added to those hooks and then filed down.
