Stock 3rd Gen Rim Questions

I've heard that the stock 3rd gen rims aren't the same weight between two model years? I'm just wondering if this is true and which year is the lightest. I'm looking to pick up a set for my MR2. Anyone know where I should look to get a set CHEAP? I don't care if the finish is flaking but no damage please.

yeah, earlier rims are lighter and CRACK! i have one on my '94 and am disappointed. not only do i have to buy a replace the engine and buy a single turbo setup, i washed it a few months ago and discovered my wheel is cracked. someting else to add to the list of **** to buy before it's road ready. later '94's and the 95's shouldn't have a problem. go to the wheel section and look for cracked factory rims thread.

Earlier rims are the ones that DON'T crack. Do some research, look at the date stamps call my bluff.

So it's the earlier ones that are lighter and don't crack? or are they heavier and don't crack?

You can tell the difference between the two . the noncracking rim has a larger radius werer the spoke joins the rim. Garfinkle in Murfreesboro Tn . has 5 rims he will sell one or 4 or all.Call him.

Every reference I have ever seen has said that the older ones, 93's and some early 94's (?) crack. They fixed the problem on 94's and 95's.

How much more do the rims that don't crack weigh?

All rims for '93s were built in 92.

All rims for '94s were built in 93.

I had a set of "crack prone" rims built in 10/94 off a 95 R2.

I've owned 12 FDs, 10 93s and 2 94s, according to the pics I've seen, cars I've owned and one cracked rim I have in MY POSSESION the early rims are the type that don't crack.

Weight, I haven't been weighing everyone of them. I think the weights are like 16lbs for the heavy ones. Don't worry about the weight.

It is very easy to identify the rims by looking at the spokes from behind. I posted pics of both kinds in a thread in the Suspension section. I have weighed several of the "heavy" ones and they all weighed 15.8 lbs.

My friend and I both have R2's built in 3/94. We both have the lighter style version of the wheels and ours are stamped 94 too. They weigh about 13.5lbs. FWIW, he has about 110K miles and no visible cracks.
