Still debating...
I was actually bent on buying a 3000GT VR4, when a friend advised an RX7 over it, saying it was lighter weight, quicker, and probably cheaper (in terms of an RX7 with 80k mile wil probably equal the price of a 3000GT with 125k miles) but from what I'm getting from these forums, these are extremely high maintenance cars, even more than the 3000GT....or is this only with the suped up RX7's? I'm not going to be installing after market performance parts to either car. So will I be set without installing performance parts? Or is it still at high risk of 5h!ting the bed on me even if I don't? Thanks for any help...
IF the motor has been well taking care of you shouldn't have any more problems then you would w/ a VR4. Have any reliability mods been done? If not you may want to keep looking or do them yourself. A stock FD is pretty reliable when its TAKEN CARE OF. This is very important. As far as mods go, not having them is probably the best route for you if you're worried about maintence costs...
If you keep it stock with ONLY safety mods(larger radiator, alum ast, etc etc), then you'll be fine as long as its a good motor to begin with. Read the stickes, and search, this question has been asked 3209492349290349023409230402934 times.
rx7 ... very very high maitnence ....a couple of days ago i was in a friends honda .. he said vtech wasent hitting as hard as it used to ... i told him that vtech had alot to do with oil presure and that he might be low on oil .... he checks and has less than a quart in it ... and the ****** was on a 80 wet shot of NOS>.. i was like what the **** thats **** would have sent my rotary to the srcap yard .... you get away with less in a rotary .. they take ALOT of maitnence ... but when there well taken care i belive there som of the best performance cars ever built .. for the money at least!
I'd upgrade the diff in the VR-4 and be done with it. FDs can be real hogs about maintenance and repair. I'd say the difference in weight is just the stuff that makes the VR-4 durable and the FD not so durable

I think the question comes down to what do YOU want in and out of a particular car. The VR-4 and the FD are very very different cars...I actually find it odd that a person who would consider one would also consider the other. Do you like light, lithe, nimble, and nubile (FD)? Or, do you prefer a heavy AWD sledgehammer techno-gee-whiz type car? They're very different cars, so it should come down to the type of characteristics that "do it" for ya.
Since you live in Massachusetts also you know that the winter is a bitch on cars. So I would highly suggest you getting the 3000GT. It's easy to maintain, more places that can fix it, and it would be easier for you yourself to work on it.
Yeah Boston I know what ya mean. That's why I'd keep my stock 94 accord, I just want a car to drive in the spring. It'll be my 2nd car. The weather around here has been weird, I remember a month or so ago there was basically a hurricane here, then in 10 minutes it stopped and the sun came out...And it was a beautiful day...Sorry for rambling, I'm high as clouds right at the moment
Drive both and decide. They are completely different animals. I loved my 3000gt, but for different reasons than I love my FD. When it comes down to pure performance, the FD wins no questions asked. If you want to cruise in comfort, the GT is the way to go. The FD is dead sexy but the GT can be a head turner too. Here's my old '95 SL (yea, I love to spam pictures on all my posts):

Yes, that's absolutely true. It will take healty dose of care and some serious getting used to. Some autocrossing or drivers school events would be a very wise idea.

Well coming from a current 3/S owner, i know the 3000's can be high maintinance, however, from what i have been told, so can FD's. Things that you really want to look out for while looking for a 3/S are the following:
TC recall done
60K/120K etc.... service, thats huge on these cars
They tend to suffer from spun bearings, so be very carful of that
etc, if there is anything you really want to know about them feel free to PM me, or check out 3SI.org and go nuts(or even pm me there at Soclose3kgt).
At the moment, im in the process of selling my car, and moving over to the FD platform, i think it really meets all my needs, where the 3K is really starting to show signs of its weight and poor brakes(im running a non turbo at the moment, brakes fade like a BITCH)
