Starting problems/ slow cranking (have done alot of searching)

Hi guys ive got a problem with my rx7.

When i start it from cold it starts up (but doesnt crank fast always sounds lazzy).
when the car is started when hot it cranks even slower and is very difficult to start.

Ive done alot of reading,, bad grounds,, bad battery, bad starter, bad compression.?

Put a brand new starter on car other day, made no difference, battery is 1 year old, but last year while doing work on car, battery was allowed to go flat several times (so possible junk).
Used my battery load tester,, showing 11v,, switch load on and get 9.5v ,is this bad?

Im gonna buy a good battery and throw that on and see what i get but i need other options.
Car had engine rebuild only 8000 miles ago (but you never know compression could be low). the thing that dont make no sense is why would it crank slower when hot if compression is lower when hot then surely it would crank faster???.

Im gonna go over all grounds and terminals tommorow clean them all up. The other thing to mention is ive had the battery relocated to storage bin. The earth goes straight to the car body but the power goes to the previous battery connector under bonnet. Should i remove the starter wire and run a fresh one straight from battery to starter. (because at moment power is going from battery to front terminal then to starter motor, if this wire is shortened will it make any difference??)

11 volts is a dead battery. I would start with making sure the alternate is working properly. You should have a minimum of 12.8 volts running, hopefully closer to 14.

When the car is running i have 14V on pfc commander.
I was thinking of hooking jump leads to my 2nd car battery and seeing if car cranks any faster that should tell me if battery is dead or not surely. Has anyone watched power fc commander to see what rpm they get when cranking hot and cold id be curious to compare figures.

if engine has low compression im gonna be pissed.!! (i pull -440 mmhg on vacuum i know thats not the best indicator),, compression tester gonna come out today.

If you are charging 14v, but only show 11v with the car off your battery has a bad cell.

Crank speed is a simple matter of battery and starter, that's it. If the battery and starter are healthy and the wires between the two are good you'll get a good crank speed.

Put a new battery in and you should be done.

Thanks dale,,, i purchased a good test meter today and checked battery voltage again,, 12.34V battery seems good,, is it possible for a battery to pass voltage test but still be shafted,, maybe it not giving out enough current.

Thinking about buying an optima red top is this overkill, i plan to check my cables today with voltmeter to make sure they not hodling up the current. I also watched starting videos of rx7 on you tube they all sound like they cranking faster than mine.

yes, its possible for a battery to pass voltage test but not have enough cca. did you try jumping the car with another one yet?

I have this problem also for a long time, I think my mechanic said it had something to do with the long wires that run from front to the back, can't remember the details, but he is gonna install a relay, that will fix the problem. Look on pettit website he sells the relay, I think he calls it a starter booster.

Looked at petit racing relay and it states that the sluggish starts is a accumulated voltage drops on starter circuit from the clutch/nuteral switch and immobilized relays

Just purchased new battery gonna put it in today and see how things are,, another silly question, my battery is relocated, i used 2 gauge wire from the battery all the way to where the batter used to be installed, is it possible my wire is to thick and causing voltage or current drop?

nope, unless you have some kinda of built in resistance in to the wire you bought, it wont cause a voltage drop if its thicker. if it was pure copper, your fine. I'd highly suggest trying to jump the car first though cuz buying new batteries to test an old one doesnt seem very money efficient. you can also try to rent or borrow a battery load tester from someone.

How many grounding wires do you have?

Right installed brand new battery,, think its fixed,, Still didnt crank as fast as i was expecting but was a definate improvement,,
cold crank was perfect,,, hot was a little slower but car started fine 3 times. (before battery it would take me 3 attempts to start car). Power wire is 2 gauge,, doesnt look like copper though is silver wire?? Think im gonna install extra grounds on the car especially to the engine and body

You might want to get a booster since you're having the " x attempts" to start the car. That would fix the "click, click, click, start" problem =].
