Starter won't work when car is hot

The car will start fine when it is cold, but when its hot the starter won't even try to kick. I think I've seen a write up about this problem a while ago but, now I can't seem to find any info. Throw me a link if you have one. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot? I have a multimeter but am not sure how to use it. Show me the money!!!or tell me how to fix it. PEACE

Your starter is bad..... most likely the brushes are shot.. Get a new starter or have yours rebuilt.

Classic symptom of the solenoid on the starter going bad. I bet the starter motor itself is fine.

Can I remove the solenoid and get a new one at a auto parts store or are they going to charge for the whole thing?

i tried to search for just the solonoid and i could not find anything. you might wanna try some kinda mazda recycler. then again, most auto stores sell starters with lifetime gaurentees so you might just wanna spend the 140 bucks for a starter you wont have to worry about it for the rest of your life.

Skunks I noticed your avatar says CF smith. Does that mean you do CF overlays?

It probably is the starter solenoid, like many have said already. Try the aforementioned tapping trick. I used to keep a crescent wrench in my old BMW for a year just for this reason. All I had to do was tap the intake manifold at first... then I had to tap the starter solenoid itself... then the solenoid REALLY died.

But in case that isn't it, if this problem has been chronic since it was new, this TSB may be of interest.

Bulletin No.: 001/93
Issued: 07/02/93
Revised:

Category: G
Applicable Models: 1993 RX-7 A/T
Subject: NO START AFTER HEAT SOAK

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
----------------------
1993 RX-7

Automatic transmission vehicles with a VIN of JM1FD***P0200001 through
JM1FD3***P0210498.

DESCRIPTION
-----------
Hard restart after running the vehicle at high speeds on hot days. Vehicle
restarts easily after engine compartment cools down.
This hard start condition is caused when heat from the engine increases the
electrical resistance in the starter wire. This decreases the amount of
current received at the "S" terminal on the starter.

To correct this problem, the starter harness length has been changed and the
amount of current applied to the "S" terminal during starting increased.

^--- Note that it only applies to automatic transmissions. I've got this problem. I just need to repeatedly turn the key until the car starts.

I finally have some time and money so today the solenoid will be replaced. If the problem continues...I'll be back and open to new ideas.
