starter solenoid???

I went to start my car yesterday and it started to turn over. Just before it caught, the starter started spinning freely, like it became disconnected from the flywheel or sheared a pin. Now it won't turn over or engage at all. The starter just spins free. I tried moving the car in gear to rotate some of the gears, figuring maybe that might re-engage something, but to no avail. Has anyone else had this happen before? I think it's the starter solenoid, either stuck or flat out broken. Either way, my car is now stuck until I can figure out what's wrong or get it towed somewhere.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Ken

If it is a 5 speed get help to push start it to save a tow bill. do not wast time typing and reading just take the starter out and see what the problem is. It is only 2 bolts , 1 nut for the main wire and pull 1 wire. No ones guess will fix your car , go for it , good skill
