Ok, nothing major (I hope) but this is buggin me! While idling (700-750) with the lights off and I put the clutch fully in and put it in first (or any other gear for that matter) I don't have this problem. With the lights on (either parking or both) she'll spin up to about 900-1000 RPM for a split second then stall. Someone suggested to adjust my idle, but since 700-750 is normal, I don't feel the need too. Any ideas, suggestions, comments, thoughts and info would help! Thanks...

Has this always happened, or did it just start?

There was a recall (SSP39) for idle problems with some of the 93 cars (VIN ...200062 - ...209530), which replaces the ECU, but that is supposed to happen when you put the clutch in while coming to a stop. There are probably plenty of other things that can cause your problem, but I thought I'd mention this just in case.

FWIW, Mazda should be calling me today, to tell me that my new ECU has arrived. I just bought a 93 R1 a few weeks ago, and the owner told me of the problem that she had since the car was new. Basically, when the AC is on, with the fan on 3 or 4, the car will occasionally die when putting in the clutch. I believe the problem is electrical load, so lights might qualify. I didn't have much time to look into it, but I went to the local Mazda dealer, and got a printout to see if there were any recalls that needed to be done, and low and behold, there was the answer (I hope).

If you aren't sure the recall has been done, contact Mazda with your VIN to see if you need it. It's free, and will only take a few minutes.

Cool...I wasn't aware of that one. It's had the others done (fuel, rat's nest and I can't remember the other one). My VIN sure is in that range...I'm on w/ Mazda right now (oh boy , what a treat.)

I have had that happen to me as well but I have a Apex'i PFC. It never happened with my old ECU but it happened once with my PFC. It does however drop RPM's down to around 700 or so when I push in hte clutch rolling up to a Stop. Is that normal?

My VIN is: 204540. So am I part of the recall?

It would appear that you should be part of the recall, but since you don't have the original ECU installed, I'm not sure what they'd do. If you still have the original ECU, I suppose you could make them swap it out, even if it meant installing it temporarily. You would have to decide if it was worth the trouble. Also, if you have the factory ECU handy, see if there's an "R" at the end of the model number. That seems to be how they designate the re-worked units.

I plan to go to a PFC eventually, when I start the mods, but for now, I'd just like to be able to put in the clutch without wondering if the engine is going to quit.
