sry, new to rx7's... need to know

i just recently purchased an 93 rx7 tt.... and wondering if anyone know if its suppose to start slow... it takes 1-2 seconds after i turn the ignition key... *sigh* i just got a tune up from a mazda dealership and they said my car checked out green... wtf! i spent 200+ dollars for them to mark a bunch of green x's on a page, and my car still starts sluggish.... could it be my starter?? or... ?? if anyone could throw out suggestions, that would be great... thanks

Now getting back to reality: first I'd check the battery voltage with and without the alternator running (car started).

If you haven't changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, and plug wires lately, do that as well.

It's not your turbo.

Does it blow smoke on the hard starts?

Anyway, download the factory service manual from www.iluvmyrx7.com and read through the troubleshooting (section F) on hard starts. And also search this forum and www.fd3s.net for info.

First find another FD and experience how it starts. It may just be a perception problem.

My battery is on it's death bed.....starts sluggishly sometimes. When I say sluggishly, I mean the starter is turning the motor a little slower than it should be (the way it used to) Still fires up after 1-2 seconds though.

If you want to know if it's your battery (and not your turbos) and you're not confident with a multimeter.........just swap someone elses battery in and see how it starts. Very easy to do.

dude, its not your turbos - period. Does the car puke white smoke from the exhaust when you start it? after you start it, does it run perfect right away or stutter a bit before firing up properly? are the hard starts generally from hot or cold or both?

I agree here - it is probably just a perception problem because I have always felt Rotaries took a second or 2 longer to start. Not much but enough that a concerned new comer might question it.

Mine (and other people's 7s) do this sometimes. I normally get 2-4 "chugs" before it turns over. On hot starts, it turns over immediately (1 chug). These cars take longer to start than other cars imo. Just listen for the chugs, as long as it takes 4 or less, I'd say you're within normal range.

I noticed the car would start better after replacing battery terminals and battery. You may want to check your grounds.

No offense, but the turbo shouldn't have anything to do with your car being able to turn over, unless you have a big rat stuck up somewhere in your intake system.

As long as your car does not puke white smoke, black smoke, have lumpy idle, does not over heat, and does boost correctly---- you shouldn't worry

I would say that your first problem is that you took it to the mazda dealership
Do yourself a favor and never do that again.....

Look in for a shop sticky in your regional section of the forum for local reliable shops. Many of the Southern OC guys should be able to help you....
The slow response to your car starting is common with all FDs. This is due to the shitty security system put in from the factory.
Look for a thread that remedies this by placing a jumper wire in the security system relay under the drivers side left kick panel. I have seen this thread once it before but keep on forgetting to locate it to fix myself.
