Spot the cat

I was changing my gear box oil recently when I decided to check the state of the pre-cat. Only probelm was that I couldn't find it!! From what I could see I think it has been replaced by a downpipe as I couldn't find the characteristic bulge you expect from a cat.

I have attached a crap photo of the exhaust section from the turbos to the main cat. What do you think? Look like a downpipe to you?

By the way, please excuse the dodgy photo quality - it was taken using my mobile phone which is really pants....

Thud

I don't really understand some of your terms like really pants etc... but there is no photo atached. As soon as you do though, shouldn't be hard at all to tell you what you have.

Sorry - picture refuses to upload, evethough it's within the size limit.

and by the way
"pants" = "not satisfactory" - as in "I rented Fast and the Furious from Blockbuster but it turned out to be pants"

and
"dodgy" = "sub standard" as in "I didn't like the second serious of the Muppet Show it was dodgy"

As you are in the UK, I assume you have a J-spec model. I remember they deleted the precat at some point in time - '96 maybe? What year is yours?

Mine's a 92. Although I'm in the UK the model I have was imported from Japan in 1997. In the UK FDs were a commercial disaster - Mazda only managed to sell about 150 in the 5 years or so that they were sold. A new price of approx 50,000 USD coupled with sky high UK fuel prices killed off the RX-7 in the UK.

So getting parts here can be expensive.....

ok thanks.

so I don't have a pre-cat (and probably never had one).

Might explain why on cold mornings I occasionally get a sonic boom of a back-fire when I crank.

Your FD is RHD, right?
Because even though you don't have a precat per say, you would still benefit from getting a larger downpipe. Most aftermarket downpipes have a less restrictive angle where it connects with the exhaust manifold.
But if your FD IS RHD, then you need to buy a J-spec downpipe. They are specially made to clear the steering column

mine is RHD...
Your rite abt benefiting with a larger downpipe... i think the stock downpipe of the Jspec has 2.75 diameter... and the aftermarket has 3"...

Australian cars are LHD so they can install either the cobra head dp or the regular aftermarket dp..

It's bad enough with American rap crap slang, now we are getting British slang. Anything/everything to be different.

For those who do not know it, rap style music was
popular in Hong Kong/Chinese movies at leaste in the 40-early 60s. Do not know how far back it goes, but most likely even before WWII. It can be seen in some old Chinese movies.

It's a bit hard to tell from that "dodgy" picture

How about a bit bigger one to be sure?

What I can see looks the same as my Aussie-delivered '97, which is described (here, anyway) as a "Thermal Reactor".

I picked up 10 KW (About 13HP) at the wheels by replacing it with a downpipe - and more importantly dropped engine bay temperatures about 20 degrees.

Show us a better picture, or I'll post a pic of my (removed) part..

wow, no pre-cat on that pipe but you can still shave half the weight with a SS DP and better yet, heat coat it.

Now as for the chips you chaps call fries, what do you call fish? Blimey, your pale.
