I could really care less, but it is nice to see a RX-7 (any rotary powered vehicle) in a national published magazine. We all thought it would put up a good fight, but the fact it came in dead last kind of sucks. Of course SCC is extremely biased against rotary powered vehicles. Their reply to Tim Benton's letter requesting more rotary content a few years back reminds me just how much SCC writers and editors dislike rotary powered vehicles. The fact that the car wasn't ready to take on the other cars only takes that much more away from the effort put forth.
Hopefully we will get a chance to redeem ourselves.

thanks for posting such positive replies about my car and all of our hard work, it's obvious many of you have no idea what kind of competition we were up against as the articles do not describe these cars. most of them had professional drivers. we did not go into this expecting to win, we would have liked to have done better. we did not get voted in, we were invited about 2 months b/4 this thing went down, the car hadn't ran in about 8 months as i had lost all interest in it. we did all that we could to get it ready...but anyway, thanks again.....

You can say that again. What kind of legitimate competition includes a burnout contest?

What if emissions aren't required where the car comes from? Should the car have to pass California emissions? What if the car comes from a more temperate climate? Should it have to have A/C? **** 'em.

They should call it what it is... the "Sport Compact Car Totally Biased Ultimate California Street Car Challenge".

Many of the guys that think they know how to build a race car are merely people that can pick cool componets out off a website.

If time gets short then you should REDUCE the number of mods your planning.

To quote Mazdatrix, "to finish first you must first finish".

13.3 @ 108. It had a cracked seal in the front rotor. It was my first drag race ever (of two, total) and the only time my car has ever been down the strip (my other drag race experience was in an FD automatic). The drag winner in our class was a white DSM that ran a 12.1. Hung-Jen's car did well in the "show" portion and he is a kick-*** auto-x driver with a lot of experience in his well-prepared car. He really cleaned up in the auto-x portion. The event only had those 3 competitions -- show, drag, and auto-x. Granny and Mr. Tailpipe Sniffer had not yet joined the party.

The orange (then yellow) Supra from TFATF was there, too. It ran a 13.9, IIRC.

I haven't seen the latest issue yet but I think I remembered posting on what happened on the two days of testing. Basically, the first day was mostly car show, driveability, emission, horsepower, gramma test, Guru test, fuel economy and probably one or two more. We scored so horrible on the first day that we were 300 points behind 9th place and 500 points behind 1st place. No matter what we do on the 2nd day would make any difference in the overall competition. Either way, I'll still try to get my 3 rotor cym for next years competition (hopefully I'll get all the stuff sorted out soon).

As for those who wonders why we did all the changes at the last minuate. All I can say is Money. Jason probably spend close to $10k in the last two months before the event getting the car sorted out and ready for it. You have to give the man some credit for pulling this together in only two months of time (not to mentioned the amount of hours Jason has to work overtime just so that he could get the parts he wanted in time for installation. Some of the parts were used and got a good deal on from other private source which causes time delay. Others were new and had to wait from the manufactures. You have to remembered that the car was basically stock 2 months prior to the competition with plans to go custom single turbo setup along with running on AEM EMS. We later decided to run dual pump fuel system after debating that the single pump will not be enough for the hp we wanted originally. Jason probably spend 2 weeks just to find the correct fittings to complete the fuel system. Once the fuel system was installed, We waited awhile for the HKS coil overs to come in, and then the Exedy twin disk to make sure that the clutch won't let go during the event since his prior clutch was on its way out. We then find a good deal on a set of Brembo big brake kit which will definately help for the road course and 60-0mph competition. It was until 3 weeks before the competition before we decided that it might be a good idea to install the Kaaz in case too much wheel hop causing the diff to disintegrated. Of course finding the correct shims for the diff turns into a nightmare causing usto be ready only 5 days before the event. Somehow, we got a fresh paint job in 2 days and ended with leaving texas 2 days before the event.

So yes, we could have left everything stock and run it as is. However, do you think that a car running stock turbos, stock suspension (touring model), stock brake system, etc... could do alot better since none of those stuff we did to the car really affect the first day of competition anyways? not to mentioned that the car doesn't have A/C, P/S and radio in it already. I think that the car would do alot better in One lap of America than it could have with this competition. I'm sure that jason will eventually compete in it since this is what the car is build for.

how did a stock car get into the magazine when Gorden Monsen's car, nicely set up and already modded didn't. So this car wasn't voted it by reader votes since I don't think a somewhat stock car would have garnered enough votes to make it.

Tim,
I'm sure that it has been said before. It was decided by the magazine editor on who's car gets in the competition. I think they're doing the same for this year as well.

Steve,

I guess I was still giving the SCC guys credit for atleast trying to use the votes people sent in. Knowing that it's more of a "hey Dave or Josh, I have a friend of a friend who has a really built ______, you should let him be in the street car championship," does sound more like something they'd do. All I know is you better have that 3 rotor ready to go for next years competition or we won't let you come visit your parents again

thanks steve, it seems as though people here have more message board horsepower and not real power....as steve stated we just didn't have enough time....several of the cars were built specifically for this event...i did not want to add a/c, p/s, radio, big wing and bling bling wheels...i built this car for me and no one else....lets see your car in there and what it can do....put up or shut up, the forms are in this months issue....we will see how you do.....

no offense boosted, but how did your car get in the magazine? Was it listed for people to vote on in the magazine? If the car had been sitting for months, what gave SCC the idea that your car should be in it? The final result of your car might be great, I still question the notion that it should have been in there to begin with, which I said from the beginning. I even questioned the rushed race to get it ready for the event back in the old post before your guys left for the event. not hating on you guys, nor Steve's excellent abilities, the choice BY SCC to include your car was my main drawback since it wasn't even running when they choose it from what it seems.

we entered it kinda as a joke, then josh from ssc called and said they really like my car and asked if we would like to come out.....i accepted and the rest is history.....there was no voting .....we did not go into this expecting to win....just exposure for the shop....it was a good experience and a lot of fun....this is one of the toughest competitions on a car as it must be very well rounded to do well.....this was the 3rd year the guy with the skyline was there, 2nd year for the supra and eclipse....we weren't sure what to expect....the car when entered had most bolt ons, but was awaiting single turbo.....i don't feel i let any of you down, we got in, we did what we could do...steve did an awesome job driving and tuning the car.....hell, i'm honored we were asked, of all the entrants we were chosen.....to quote some jackhole "sad day for rotaries" since when did you help????? i thought so....not trying to be an ***, but come on......
i apologize for going off but aren't we all on the same team????
