So, is there a Bose replacement head unit that will fit in my FD and retain factory looks and is better than my original? One that I can keep the amps and speakers and just replace the head unit? Maybe a 6-cd in dash MP3 player?

United States and UK FM broadcasts are in the range of 88-108 MHz, but Japanese FM broadcasts are in the 76-90 MHz range (they use 90-108 MHz for TV audio and VHF channels 1-3). You can get a frequency converter to raise the frequencies of a JDM stereo to the US/UK range.

US stations end in odd numbers (96.5, 99.9, etc.), and so do Japanese stations, as far as I know, but UK stations end in even numbers, IIRC.
