Spewed coolant out the overflow while idling

My car was in the normal operating temperature and I let it idle for 10 mins or so when I noticed the water temp on the commander climb to 115 C. My friend outside also noticed that coolant was leaking out of the overflow bottle area while it was idling so I shut it off immediately and noticed a big pool of coolant right beneath the coolant reservoir. I did a search and came to the conclusion that both the caps need to be replaced but were only under the circumstances when the car was off and coolant started leaking out the overflow. Does this also apply to when the car is on? Thanks for the help.
