Speedometer, tachometer and odometer all stopped working at the same time

As the title states, my speedometer, tachometer and odometer all stopped working at the same time. I did a search and this seems like a common problem for one to stop working, but not all three at the same time. Looking for advice on where to start fixing it.

Also, right around the time the instruments stopped working, my check engine light started coming on after I rev past a certain RPM. Could that be because the instruments arent working?

Thanks.

hey man, could be a ground connection got loose. I believe the gauges are all connected to ground X-14, you can find and trace it in the workshop manual under the wiring diagrams. Check that first. Also it could be that you may need to do some resoldering due to the old capacitors in the gauge cluster malfunctioning. There is a pretty good extensive writeup about someone taking it apart and all the different capacitors and resistors that you should replace.

Did you lose all gauges - gas, temp, & oil press too? Check your METER fuse.

No, gas, temp and oil pressure still work.

Have you done any electrical work in/around the dash?

Remove the instrument cluster and inspect the flex print. Next, inspect the speedometer board as outlined in the "just got done...fixing odometer" thread.

Look for any burned up solder runs or solid state components (resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc...).

Please post any discussion or photos to that thread.

Cheers,
George

The CEL at RPM may be caused by something else. That proplem is not normally associated with a dead speedo or odometer.

Have you done any resesrch about it from the wiring schematics?

Did you ever find the cause of your instrument cluster problems, Mr. Papagiorgio?

Cheers,
George

Realize this is an old thread. Also interested if there was a straightforward solve, or if you had needed to re-solder some capacitors in.

Just put my OEM cluster back on after using a JDM one for the past few years to pass emissions testing (my OEM odo was dead). Worked for about 100 miles and then today after driving for a few mins my Tach and Speedo went dead. They twitch occasionally, and then flatline for the rest of the drive. If I restart the car after a few mins, they work for a couple of miles and then die again. Super frustrating!

The same

I had my odometer and rpm gauge stop working. I still have light on the odometer but no numbers. Rpm gauge always works when I turn the car on but then later goes out. Hell sometimes it works well for over a half an hour drive. I have read some things but mine seems different then what I have read in the threads

So I have a JDM cluster out of the car with a wonky Tach. And the aforementioned OEM one back in the car with its new set of problems.

Has anyone found a vendor that can repair / test these gauges that I can ship my spare cluster too?

Just for kicks, I disabled the cluster tonight and pulled the tach off and there weren’t any obvious blown capacitors on it. But that being said, who knows where the issue lies. It looks like the flexible circuit board (who the #%^*#! came up with that idea?) isn’t intended to come off as all the white posts keep it secured. I don’t know if something is bad on that or not.

Hoping to find some solve.

Quick followup question. If both the Tach and Speedo are failing simultaneously, is there a possibility it is a bad ground or other type of connection, vs something on circuit that is blown?
