Freakily enough...mine did the exact same thing today! What the hell?
Mine just seems to be dead. There is a VERY dim illuminance to it, and no numbers, etc.

I'm thinking on taking the cluster out this weekend and find out if it is the light bulb or the corrode pins. But I have a question. Would the actual mileage come back on the screen? Man because is killing me that the car have only 56,000 miles

Thanks

The mileage # should stay the same unless the memory chip that stores it went bad (which I doubt).

So to answer your question - Yes, the mileage # won't be changed if it's just a bad bulb or connector/contact problem.

So was it the bulb that was bad? I'm curious to know if it fixed the issue.

Slight revival of this thread because I too want to see what others have found with this issue.

I guess I need to take the gauge cluster out, which obviously involves removing the steering wheel, which means taking the air bag unit out. Looking thru the Service Manual, it seems that reinstalling this thing can be a bitch...?

I need to get my odometer fixed as I have a 'low mileage clause' with my insurance company that I have to prove by sending them pictures of my odometer. This cuts my insurance cost literally in half, so I have a vested interest in getting it done.

No need to take the steering wheel off or mess with the airbag. There are several threads on how to remove the cluster without doing that.

Also multiple threads on how to replace the capacitors yourself if you don't want to take the cluster to a shop.

Ok.

Uh...so...I searched 'odometer', and only found a couple of threads. Care to help a brother out and point him in the best direction?

Thanks!

My cluster is dead also, I plan to have it fixed after my curent engine rebuild. My blessings is that Rotary Performance in Dallas has a local shop that rebuilds them. According to the guys at RP they have had great results.

Okay, so I got the damned thing out. It ranks right up there with downpipe removal and fuel filter replacement. I ended up dropping the steering column just to be able to get enough room to disconnect the wires.

Now, can I just put 12v to the bulb and see if it is bad/good?

I was wondering about that too. Do you remember if it was a fuse on the inside fuse box or does it have a fuse box in the engine bay? Any one knows which is the fuse??? Thanks....

FYI, you can get these bulbs at O'Reilly's for about $2 each, they are PC74 Sylvania bulbs.

So, it isn't the bulb on mine, it's the odometer itself. Guess I'll be sending it off to get fixed.

Lots of threads on fixing the odometer yourself -- capacitors are Cheap and usually it's only one or two that need replacing.

This happened to me a few years back. The odometer was not working. It would light up but no mileage. you have to take the guage cluster out and you have to remove speedometer guage and behind the speedometer guage there are about 2 capacitors that were burnt out that needed to be replaced. There is a thread somewhere here that is still up that gives you step by step directions and also lets you know what supplies you need and which capacitors to replace. I followed the instructions step by step and got my odometer working again. Original mileage came back up and everything.I had no experience on soldering/replacing capacitors, etc but even I was able to fix this no problem. So basically if I can do it anyone can. About a month ago my speedometer itself blew out and I went back in and replaced a few other capacitors and also got that back to work also. Well good luck.

Yeah...I've read thru the very detailed instruction on replacing the capacitors, but one thing that is prevalent thru that entire thread is the 'fix' often times isn't permanent, with multiple 'fixes' having to take place. My hope is that a specialty shop offers a warranty and/or does a "better" (no offense to those that have done it) repair in the first place.

You can buy ALL the capacitors for the entire board for like $5.
I ordered them all and here's what the set looked like.
