Exclamation Sparkplug Questions

I have some stupid sparkplug questions... You can answer either or all.

1. What is sparkplug "gapping" and why should I care?

2. Is changing the plugs on any car as simple as torquing the old ones out and torquing the new ones in, or is there something else I am missing?

3. Other than the specialized NGK plugs that we need for our cars, are there differences in changing plugs on a 13B-TT vs., say, a Honda 4cyl?

Thanks in advance.

1. you dont need to worry about a gap
2. if you tighten it wit your hand, that is about as tight as you need it, no your not missing anything
3.you are changing plugs in a better motor if you are doing it on a 13b

The gap is not adjustable on an FD.

Just put a little anti-seize on the threads of the new ones, I've heard of spark plugs seizing up in the housing.

I don't think so, I've never owned a honda 4-banger.

Thanks in advance.

Changing the plugs is a little bit more involved simply because of their location on an FD. I know folks who have changed them from underneath the car, but you've gotta be double jointed if you intend to do them from above. The engine compartment of our cars is something only a sadist could have designed. I documented my experience changing both the wires and plugs here.

Yes, you did miss one thing. You should always use "antiseize compound" on the threads of the spark plugs before installing them.

Do this work from under the car and there is nothing to it.

Actually, with a little practice it's no big deal. Once you know how to reach down in there and position your hands so as to avoid all the wiring and whatnot it's a breeze from the top. I just changed my leading plugs from the top (threw in some nice ngk 10.5s) in under ten minutes.

just take off the intake elbow if you even need to do that and do it from the top....
i think its MUCH easier than from the bottom....the one time i HAVE done it from the bottom i crossthreaded the plug taking it out (not sure if it was prior damage or me)

like rich said though.....doing it from the top is easy smeezy and it only takes a few minutes

and ya, dont forget the anti seize.....
