Smoking on the start
Smoking on the start
I have a 95 R2 with aftermarket exhaust(CB)...and I have a few other goodies too. Anyway...I have noticed that it smokes for about 8-10 seconds after the intial start up. I no that rotaries are supposed to smoke a bit with them being oil injected. But I wondered if that is normal or not. Only 50K on it...so I think I'm fine there. Oh yeah, it's not a huge explosion of smoke....just a small trail of it.
I wouldn't worry about it and the general consensus is that it is pretty normal. I have a lil smoke on startup (it actually varies from day-to-day) and havent had any problems. If it continues to smoke for a while or under hard acceleration, then start worrying. Also, find out what color the smoke is, this will tell you what is burning inside.

A small amount at start-up is normal for all rotaries. It has to do with the design of the engine and the residual oil left by the metering oil pump when you shut the car off. The amount of time it smokes though can give you an idea if there is anything going bad. I think the norm (at least on my car) is a small puff as soon as it starts and then for 10-15 seconds after that. If it's anymore then you might have a small amount of oil being consumed elsewhere.
Would it make sense to smoke a little longer at start up cause of Bad "O"rings.......My 7 smokes for about 35-45 sec, ........I'm already saving up for a new motor due to the bad "o" rings
