So what would fry in the steering column and not let me start? I saw a puff of smoke as I turned the key from the left side of the column. I was getting ready to take my son to soccer practice when this happened. I'll be tearing it apart and inspecting tomorrow.

 

The factory wiring harness sends power for quite a few different circuits through the ignition switch. If you have replaced the OEM fuses with higher-amperage fuses you may have been drawing more current through the ignition switch than it was built for. It's also possible you were just unlucky, these cars are getting old. I'd check for any blown fuses, and also compare the ratings for each fuse against the labels on the fuse box lid. For instance, the 'Engine' fuse should be 15A, and the 'Fuel Pump' fuse should be 20A.

 

Nope no fuses where changed. But i'll be looking at everything tomorrow.

 

Just took things apart. Yup burnt sulfer smell the ignition switch was toast. completely forgot the name of that thing. Thanks Scotty!

 

Is there a way to check to make sure i have good voltage's and what not before i put the new one in and fry it? It'll be here either tomorrow or Friday.
