How do I remove steering column grommet from bottom of column?

Bought a used steering column grommet from the forum under the assumtion that the '93 and '94+ ones would be the same part. They aren't, but I can't figure out if the '94+ grommet I bought fits my '93 column until I can remove the old grommet:

The rubber bit and the metal thingy are bonded together and the whole thing is stuck on the bottom of the column there, somehow. I don't know if it's threaded or what, but I can't get it off.

Anyone know how?

thanks,
James

Perhaps the rubber ring that goes on the engine-side of the firewall is non-servicable, and you can only replace the ring on the back side?
