SMIC won't fit

Yeah, I know you have heard that one before.

I purchaced a new SMIC. It is a nice SR motorsports one. When my reman went in we tried to make it fit but to no avail. That thing is fatty. I wanted my car back asap so I decided not to bother trying to get it to fit and just had the stock one put back in.

The radiator in my car is fatty too. That worries me because I think there is less flow getting to my stock IC. Because my reman is bad and I am getting another motor soon we are going to pull the whole damn thing apart again anyways. I thought we might try again to see if we make that stupid thing fit. I don't know how through. I would have to move the AST and some other stuff. Who has done this and has pictures/instructions. I suck at this kind of thing so help is appreciated. My car loves rx7club

what do you mean it won't fit? do you mean the piping won't line up with it? the hood won't close?

if it's not got the same dimensions as a stock IC, the piping probably won't work.

Weird, SR Motorsport looks pretty much like a snap on.

The piping matches up fine it is just too fat.

I think it would touch the fan assembly. There just isn't length/width room for it. If that space were just a bit wider it would fit. I think it is because of my Koyo. We had to readjust things a tad bit to get it to fit.

Yes you probably have to lower the koyo. Bending the brackets should be enough.

Post pics of your setup, may help the club figure out how to help fix your problem, instead of just guessing where the problem is in your setup.

I will get pictures. It will take a bit though. I will wait until I try to put it in again to give you guys a good idea.

The Koyo is the only aftermarket part that could interfere with the SMIC. That Koyo was a tight fit and I could probably get the SMIC to fit with the stock radiator. Before I have the new motor put in I will get a Pettit AST as well.

I know that many people have to rearrange things to get their SMIC's to fit. I was wondering if anyone has some general advice because I wont have pictures for another 2 weeks or so.

Well that's the thing. I've got a GReddy SMIC in mine right now (and a Koyo) we got her in and mounted without a problem.

Here's how mine turned out.

Took both pics this winter, before adding a few more toys..

oh i see! yeah you may have to adjust the radiator to get it in there then. does it have the stock IC ducting? maybe that can be trimmed to fit?

Thanks for the pics!

Yeah I have the stock ducting. Did that ducting/mounting piece come with the SMIC? were can I get one? Did it make a difference for you as far as space goes?

Would you mind taking some more pictures of that for me? It would be a huge help. I pointed out some areas I would like to see that were figment areas for me.

Thanks so much for helping me out with this!

I had a Geddy SMIC installed with a Fluidyne Rad without any problems. I am not good at mechinacal things either. Had a pro do it.

That is not an optimal setup in the least bit. You have absolutely no fresh air hitting the IC. Your Intake Air Temps must be as high as your Coolant temps.

Sukai, You are welcome to stop in sometime if you want a fresh set of eyes on this. I ran into issues when trying to run my SMIC with the Koyo which is why I added a couple of different holes to the radiator brackets.

^UH not really, I mean of course it would be better for with a duct but my intake temps on mine never go above 45C(being the highest) unless I let let the car sit and the fans come on and blow hot air into the IC, as soon as I get moving my intake temps go back to normal.

Agreed.

I only had it like that during the winter (I have the stock duct back in now), I installed it a couple weeks after I got the car (in late November '06) and the car sat until I got back from Afghanistan in mid fall '07. Though, honestly, the IAT's weren't that bad. I'm thinking of making a custom duct out of Aluminum because the inlet of the stock one is so small, and hardly protrudes below the top of the bumper.

I'm planning on getting an A/I system installed in the next month or so anyway, and will be getting a V-Mount at the end of the summer, so really not *too* concerned about the SMIC anymore. She served her purpose, but with my car now tuned to 16psi... it's just overwhelmed regardless.

I'll see if I already have pic's taken of the area's you're looking for. Though I gotta warn you that uploading any fresh pics is going to be a pain in the *** for me (home computer is fried, computers at work have all ports disabled..)

Where are you in San Diego? I would reimburse you for gas and bribe you with food (I am a personal chef ) If you stop by Solana Beach when we are trying to fit SMIC and show us how you did it

Are you mentally disabled? Get some ducting to your SMIC. And, stop drinking lead paint. Currently youd be better off running the stock setup.

Hey thanks dipshit. I'm so glad you read my next post where I stated that I ONLY HAD IT IN LIKE THAT FOR A LITTLE WHILE, DURING THE WINTER and now have the ducting back on.

Cheers for the useful post champ!

I'm refusing to look at pictures with aftermarket intake, no air duct, no battery box, aftermarjet AST and people saying "it fits"

For greddy to fit - one airbox mount has to be removed completely and airduct has to be trimed according to manual.

For Blitz -I had to drill 2 new holes in crossmember for bottom mounts. Now it fits perfectly inline with duct and everything else. I had to trim airbox mount a little.

I have the Greddy smic, and with the stock duct my intake temps would take a long time to get down after stopping, then starting again. So I got a Petit duct, cut it to fit, and then used metal tape and duct tape to close any gaps. My intake temps drop sooo much faster now.
