SMIC? only one?

So ive decided to get a SMIC... ive been looking around and it looks like i can only find one...

The Greddy SMIC...
http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fdintercooler.html

Ive already got a DP, Catback, Intake(coming soon), Greddy 3 Piece Pipe Kit, Fuel Pump, Fluidyne aluminum radiator, AST, Samco Coolant Hose and Oil Lines, Host techniques host upgrade kits...

So i think the Intercooler is the next thing to get as well as a tune to make sure its all good..

would you guys suggest a wastegate or boost controller...

im just trying to get her ultra reliable.. more interested in reliability over power.

Are there other SMIC to consider?

Thanks!

m2 or asp, you should be able to find them used. ebay- if you make your own duct. There's a couple of others. There aren't many still in production.

The small Pettit one will, but the large has it's own pipe but will work with the Greddy elbow, I believe.

Hey strunk! Whats goin on man?

Im looking for SMICs as well. From my experience, the Greddy/Trust SMIC is excellent from an installation POV. Its easy to find used ones but its hard to find ones that include the duct and piping.

I bought an awesome M2 one but the engine bay will have to be reorganized to make it fit which is why Im looking for a smaller SMIC right now. Im even going to have to get rid of my intakes. It really sucks. You can get a good price from rx7.com with the 25% cash back from MS live. Thats the best new option I have seen so far.

I have the m2 Large and it requires the battery to be relocated to the rear bins. I like it that way, makes the bay much cleaner

Is that all? What kind of intakes do you have? I think my intakes stick out to much. I may have the large M2 as well. I agree about the battery relocation. I've always wanted to do that anyway.

Yeah I have greddy intakes with the mushrooms. I definitely have to either look elsewhere or have the the relocation and new intakes done.

Thanks for the pic

MS, microsoft not M2 ahahaha.

Its not exactly a discount. I think how it works is that there is a cashback promotion microsoft is doing if you buy from ebay or something a certain way (25%). You buy gift certificates for rx7.com from ebay and get them for 25% of. You use certificates. BINGO BANGO.

If you can get hold of an M2 medium or large IC, it would be worth it. They have to be the best SMIC.

FWIW...overall really happy with my PFS so far. A couple of points.......

I can only compare intake temps over OEM, which doesn't really do you any good. But spool-up seemed quicker...inferring less pressure drop. I also had to re-adjust my MBC...which was another good sign.

The inlet neck design makes it a tight fit for an AST, especially the one I'd been using previously. I deleted it with the FC filler neck kit with no issues.

Materials and construction are excellent on mine. But apparently the inlet and outlet necks on new(er) versions are bent tubing instead of cast as pictured below. Not sure about the end-tanks. I doubt any performance difference... but just so you know.

The duct is very sturdy gel-coated FG and well designed. Intake box is made similarly but does scavange air from the duct in it's stock form. It's easily modded for CAI though.

If you stick with the PFS intake, you must use the accordian hoses or spend some money to have them custom made.

I've seen a couple of decent shape used ones come up in the FS section in the last few months for MUCH less than new.

Woah woah woaaah, are you saying NO difference in intake temp? Did I read that right? Thats the main reason for me buying an SMIC. I had intake temps of 79 once and that was enough to scare me into buying an SMIC (to bad it didnt fit haaa), although it was in traffic so its a bit unfair say that was typical.

The thing I really hate about the stock IC is that temps never seem to go down as fast as my radiator does. Sometimes I suspect it never goes down at all during the summer.

No, you didn't. What I said was that I can only compare the PFS with the OEM IC. I just assumed the OP would prefer to have comparisons among the other aftermarket ICs. At similar ambient temps and similar amounts of stock (10 psi) boost, the PFS dropped my intake temps between 10 and 15 degrees C. (about 50 to 60 F. ) as read by my PFC at the outlet of the IC (notice the relocated IAT in the picture).

alright now for another newb question! first, should i make a new thread?

intake + smic.. best combo for reliability/performance/dollar? Looking for an intake that wont soak up to much engine heat and give a nice cold dense air.

Combo #1
Coolcharge II Intercooler from Pettit - $1000
http://pettitracing.com/rx7/index_turbo.htm

For the intake right now im looking at:
TKT Cold Air Intake from Pettit -$350
http://pettitracing.com/rx7/index_intake.htm

subtotal - 1350

and Combo #2

And the SR intake (i know someone said SR tries to rip people off which is why im asking about this intake... its a cold air and seems reasonably priced but is it worth the extra 150?)
http://www.srmotorsports.com/sr93intk.html - 500

with the SR SMIC (the pries is only 750 and ill call to make sure it includes duct)
SR Upgrade High Performance Intercooler - 790
http://www.srmotorsports.com/sr93intr.html

subtotal - 1290

Combo #3 - mixing the better prices of the above two.
Or i could if i wanted to get Pettit Intake(350) and the SR IC (790) if i wanted to save money.. would this make difference?

subtotal - 1190

THANKS EVERYONE WITH YOUR HELP FROM A NEWB!

My friend, get a SMIC from m2, petit, and PFS whatever, pretty much all the same. You can get those K&N filters for cheap, around $50 with ebay hard pipes. Thats what I have.

Wow good job strunk. It was really nice of you to get the new stuff priced out. If that SR SMIC is 750 with everything included, thats a great price. I think Greddy/Trust SMIC with all stuff included is around 650 or so.
