I have tried a couple short throw shifters, C's and the Mazdaspeed.
The C's I found quite stiff and it had allot of trouble getting into reverse.
The Mazdaspeed I currently have is a little smoother but still needs effort getting thru the gears. It there any shifter out there that is smooth and really effortless and short?

Or is this too much too ask with the 3rd gen tranny?

 

I can't comment on any other shifters other than stock and a B&M unit, but the B&M is really notchy and is harder to get into gear than stock.

 

I've also only tried stock and B&M shifters. I really loved the feel of stock, but wanted something shorter so I just got the B&M, but those are very difficult to get into the higher gears and reverse.

 

i dont know, but my B&M feels great and isn't hard at all shifting tru gears...

 

I love my Gotham Racing short shifter. Have had it installed over a year with no problems. Short throw, smooth engagement

 

I like my B&M. Just get a really really heavy shift ****.

 

You will never find a short shifter that feels as "smooth and effortless" as the stock unit, because all short shifters increase the leverage ratio to shorten the shift throw.

 

I have a B&M with a stock shift **** and I love it.

It was far less lovable with a momo shift ****.

I looked at the Gotham Racing site and saw their short shifter. It looks almost identical to the B&M short shifter. What are the differences between the two?

 

i just installed my B&M. night and day difference between that and stock. also it is very persice, and gear engagement is firm and definative. best mod yet.lol

I know the B & M has really short shifts but I also heard you still need quite the effort
shifting between the gears...is this true?

 

I have the B&M. Its a slight bit notchy, and requires a little more effort to go into gear, but gear engagement gives you a nice crisp *click*, and I havent missed a shift yet.

 

anyone here have an ikeya formula shifter? wondering what that's like....

i love the stock fd shifter.

the fc's, on the other hand, feel like mush. i'm not talking about the worn-out bushings either--the throw is about as long as the 3-speed in my uncle's 68 pickup truck

 

Pettit sells the C's...not very good in my opinion.

 

pettit is over priced, thank god my ex gf bought mine, otherwise id be annoyed at this point. Just spend 1/2 that and get a b and m or a gothams racing.....

 

B&M here love the way it feels it just pulls it into gear, and with the right oil and break in this thing rocks, havent tried another one i like more, and i've had the gothom, C's and mazdaspeed, and the famous ebay type ... lol that was a joke.

 

What type of oil did you use?

 

Pettit's and the RX-7 Store shifters (same brand) shorten the throw by about 66%, while B&M/Gotham shorten 33%. That's why there is a price difference (as well as a performance difference). Also, you rarely (if ever) hear about people complaining about rattling with those shifters.

 

Man if the B&M is smooth then I would hate to see what the others feels like because I hate my B&M shifter. I have no problem getting it into gear but if you are not used to it it will be a pita.

 

i have the c's and i love it, very short throws and so precise. in my opinion it feels like a totally different car. i have no problems getting it into reverse, although i ran into the problem where i tightened the allen head bolts down too tight and the shifter wouldnt move, so i loosened them up a bit and ba-da-bing it worked. i also put a lil tranny oil in there where the ball-joint goes.

I've used the C's, Mazdaspeed, and B&M short shifters.
Of the three, the B&M is a POS in comparison. And the Mazdaspeed, by far, is the best one. Never a missed 3rd gear, no matter how hard or fast you shift.
