Short shifter mess with syncros?

I have search and found no hard evidents of short shifter messing with the syncros. Although I have heard on some threads that it does. Anyway I was thinking to go with the Rx7store shifter which is 50% shorter or the B&M which is 25% shorter.

So does anyone have any proof that it does? any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm kind of curious too. My dad got a b&m for his car, and its really bitchin. So far it hasn't caused any problems with the getrag 6 speed he has (not an RX7). I wish I could help out more. Josh

the only thing i can think about messing up is how fast you shift. if you are a fast shifter(how is it, mad fast yo) then shortening the shifts will mean that the foot will have to reach the clutch before the hand meets the shifter. that 25% isnt too bad, but i dont really think there is a reason for mad fast shifting. i can make my face come off the stereo on my honda its all skillz

The only reason it would is because you shift faster, but it really wont be much faster, I can bang the shifter forward 3 inches just as fast as I can bang it 2 inches. To me, short shifters are more about feel than speed. But synchros are snychros, they only work so fast, you can't make them work any faster. And I don't think you can brake them trying to.

with my B&M shifter, every time i go from first to second it's like it catches something in between. It doesn't go so smooth. So i don't know really if that's going to be a problem in the future or the shifter needs to work in. I got it 2 weeks ago, so who knows.

Of course, you know that's physically impossible.

I liken the shorter shifter to ergonomics, the less motion your upper arm the better. I can almost just flick my wrist without moving my upper arm. That's a good way to avoid carpel tunnel with all that repetitive motion While I agree that you really don't need to shift "mad fast, yo", I feel that the 1-2 shift is of upmost importance while street racing, or just for the cool feeling of being able to slip sideways when grabbing 2nd. It is not something you just "do", it's all about timing, practice, and of course some ability.
As for short shifters and synchros, it's all baloney. It's all about the care of the nut behind the shifter (you) and your ability and timing.

Regards,
Frank

well, 1st you can learn to rev match and instead of shifting mad quick, you can learn to shift mad smooth (if you haven't already, i just find it far more satisfying to drive with the smoothness than the quickness ) rev matching will help the syncros work less and less, and therefor wear less and less, even less than the average driver daily driving.

personally, i think the stock throw is fine, and if i got any shifter, it would be a "long throw" with more side to side spacing between the gates, if that's even possible (good by 2>3 miss for ever). i know what 911GT2 means. imo 1 inch less throw isn't going to make you shift faster enough to be worth it on the 7.

anyways, rev match.

u cant really rev match up shifting though unless u wanna sit there watching the tac and waiting and waiting for the revs to fall.

i think the issue is this. Since it is a shorter, quicker throw no matter how hard u push it, that means the synchros have that much less time to speed up the gears. So if youre 5th gear synchro is going out for example, the short shifter could feasibly make it worse.
just my logical $.02
