which short shifter?
which short shifter?
Can anyone confirm which short shift has the shortest throw?
I installed a re-amemiya one for a customer the other day. He bought it off of ebay, so I don't know if it was a genuine item or not but there was not much difference between the throw on a stock setup. I have been in a car with a mazdaspeed before which was pretty short, just trying find the general thoughts on which is best.

I'm also wondering about this.
Re-Amemiya are usually considered good stuff in my book, but it doesn't have to be a bad shortshifter just because the throws are almost stock.. But to find out what shortshifter have the shortest throws would be a nice piece of knowledge for sure.

several people have commented similarily about the RE unit
the shift reduction on the mazdaspeed unit is quoted as 25%
not sure about c's - here's an ad, should be on there somewhere (maybe your eyes are better than mine): http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e50059649
As far as which unit is 'best', I did a fair bit of searching on this topic, and popular opinion seemed to be 1. mazdaspeed, 2. C's, 3. B&M. With quite a few negative comments about the B&M, relative to the other two. I went for the C's, mainly due to the price differential (x2), Unfortunately - I didn't notice a significant throw reduction, it's notchier than I expected, and any reduction of throw is countered by the fact that it takes double the force to shift. In short - not a good mod at all. I did have a somewhat notchy 1-2 shift - so not a good platform to start with, admittedly.

There are two things a short shifter can do:
1) Have a shorter throw.
2) Lower the stock shifter **** position.
A good short shifter does both however some kits out there simply chop the shifter, put the shift **** lower and advertise as a short shifter. Which is true to some extent, it is 'shorter'.

RE Amemiya is basically the stock shifter with a shortened shaft. The distance from the pivot point (ball socket) to the bottom of the shifter is unchanged.
PETTIT/MAZDASPEED/rx7store short throw shifters are the same and I think result in the shortest throw (reducing about 50%). They have shortened shafts AND lengthen the distance from the pivot point to the bottom bushing. This will cause a loss of mechanical leverage and make shifting effort a little heavier. But I still like mine.

Ok looked at the other thread. Looks like the b&m have a nice short throw but make the actual gear change very notchy, so I will be better off with the mazdaspeed or C's, for short throw and smooth gears?
DaiOni it looks like that ad for C's claims it knocks half a second off of 1/4 mile time?

Not that it's an actual direct comparison, but I drove an FD with a B&M SS, and I definitely prefer the action of my Mazdaspeed unit. B&M was notchy and required greater effort to shift.

I have a B&M as well. The throw is very short and due to less leverage on the shifter it is a bit harder to shift. It is notchy and rattles a bit too. The only real reason to change to a shorter shifter in the 3rd gen is to replace broken parts, as was my case. The stock is already short and if you're going to complain about a notchy shift stay stock or save your money.
Changing to a shortshifter should in no way take 1/2 a second of your quarter mile time...unless your just really really slow with the stock unit. I was looking at the Gotham racing shifter $99 on sale. It looks similar to the B&M unit? Anyone know anything about it or tried it?
