Question Short lived, can't devote the time

Lately I've been considering selling my FD. Current situation is 2 cars, motorcycle (that needs some TLC), scooter, and a bicycle. I'm a single college student that REALLY does not have the time to spend on cars. I guess I'm really paranoid on when and what the car will do if it ever needs a rebuild. I don't have a dedicated garage space to work on cars (shared underground), tools, or time.

Honestly could use some input on the situation:
1) Sell the car, get something practical for WI weather
2) Hold onto it as long as I can, hardly driving it
3) Drive it till rebuild comes, worry about it then

I'm not in a situation where money is tight, however I can't be spending $10k+ for a rebuild/swap. This car is my dream car, however there are other things I really need to concentrate on.

you have 2 cars, what's the other one? Honestly I would sell the bike, and scooter, and hold onto the FD. I'm in a somewhat similar situation and have contemplated selling mine, but I love it too much. The weather well clear up and you'll stop having these thoughts, that's how it was for me last winter. Honestly, if you're that worried about reliability of it right now, get a very basic water injection system for it and have fun.

yeah I'm there man, except mine probably needs a rebuild!!
Had mine, got made redundant so couldn't afford the upkeep of the FD, rented a garage, couldn't afford that so left it in my car park until it got vandalised AND towed away by the landlord (no road tax!!), paid $2k dollars to get it out of the pound, back in the garage, now can't afford it AGAIN, so, that was over 6, yes 6 years I didn't use it but never wanted to sell it because it's beautiful and means alot to me.

So, now I've been using my Ninja to get around London which is ok because it cuts through traffic jams but the weather here is often terrible so.

I don't want to pour more money into the garage so I decide to pull the car out and sell it for whatever I can get...............then I pull it out and it seduces me all over again

Now I'm new to the forum despite being an FD owner for 7 years, and I'm here because I'm going to fix up my FD, and whilst looking through this forum the vision I have got of the FD is that with alot of effort and nurtureing these cars can become beautiful Beasts of the highway.

Sell your bike and your damned scooter, even the bicycle and the other car if you need to but keep the FD, the life it will give you once you've made the time to sort it out will far exceed the benefit you will get by selling it.

Like the other chap said there's things that you can do to keep the regular FD issues at bay like AI water injection that will keep the combustion temps down and steam clean your engine at the same time, pre-mix the petrol with 2 cycle oil and elimiate the oil pump which is much healthier for the engine. There's a bunch of guys on here with a World of FD knowledge that can dig you out of a hole if need be.

Don't give up the dream man!!!

Sometimes I walk into my garage and want to burn my car to the ground

then the feeling passes

my car is an icon of achievement, it means much more to me than just a car.

The idea of destroying it comes before the thought of selling it.

If the feeling in your heart isn't absolute, then it may not be the right time for an FD.

I'm going to tell you to keep it, but the choice is yours.

Just imagine how you will feel when you come down to an empty parking spot with a massive oil stain. It will be a constant reminder of something you gave up on.

I went through the same thing. I had to sell my FD, my pride and joy when I was in college. I ended up picking up a GTO but told myself that I will buy another FD once I graduate from college. I deeply missed the FD, how fun it was to drive and how you felt one with the road. Pushed through my years of college, graduated with a job and three months after graduating, I sold my GTO and bought an S4 (Stage 3) and an FD that I'm currently building right now.

You make sacrifices now in order to benefit in the future. If you have to make a thread like this, then give up the FD and you will know when you're ready to buy another.

Good luck!

Other "beater" car is a '95 MX-6. One of the reasons WHY I went for that is because it has similar curves to the FD. I'll never give up motorcycle riding. I've been in one crash, that hasn't stopped me after 3 ligaments repaired, and 2 staph infections. Currently riding a K5 GSXR 600. The scooter will definitely go. I picked it up super cheap, probably can make a few off it. Bicycle was put together by me, and I love riding fixed gear bikes.

K5 Gixxer, nice...love the bike riding aswell. How does a student come to own an FD and a really nice bike?? What have you decided?

Trucks are pretty sweet. B series?

The Gixxer I've had for 3 years now. Took out loans for the bike and car. No credit card. $14/hour job, part-time student/work. I've been going to college since '02 ... so I'm not THAT kind of student :p

The car is in decent shape. Only gripes on it, idles high (1500rpm, possibly from new battery change?), and has paint damage just above the passenger door.

I think after moving downtown Madison, I'm not using vehicles as much. One season I put over 10k miles on the motorcycle, but this last season I barely broke 1k, go figure that one out. I just have a feeling that the FD could deserve a better home. However selfishness gets in the way of things.

how much do you think you would get for it, I have no idea what the FD goes for in the States. Would you lose alot of money if you sold it?

I bought it for $20k. It WOULD be nice to get something around there since I haven't put 1k miles on it even. Sad, I know.

WOW, they're much cheaper over here, or what I meant is they depreciate more over here I think, you can pick up a eg - 95 FD with a few mods and a recent rebuild for about 3-4 thousand dollars, some are also going for a lot less. That's another big reason why I'm not bothering to sell mine.

Sell it and your other toys. That is way too much overhead for a college kid. Keep one car. Spend the money on tuition and hooking up with as many college girls as possible - while controlling debt.

Buy toys once you have a real job.

Totally agree.

$20k was pretty steep for the FD. However with 51k miles and original engine components, no mods, I jumped on it.
