Shifter/tranny lube
Folks, I tried searching but didn't quite get what I was looking for. I may not have the correct terms, and what not. But anyways, here is my question...
You know how when you replace the shift rod bottom bushing (end of the ball), or even replace the entire shifter with a short shifter? They say to top the chamber with "fluid"... my question is, what exactly is that fluid? Is it just simple transmission fluid (what I figured, but wanted to be sure)? What brand do you recommend? And lastly, do I just fill it up till I can see it topped?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Its transmission (gear) oil. Just what's in the tranny itself. Fill it up to about the middle of the ball so that when the ball is put in you don't overflow it. Make sure the ball is greased as it's supposed to be. Reference the FSM page J-59, the measured volume of oil equates to 3/8 of a cup. That's about 80grams of oil, if you have a scale around to measure it. Next time I'm in there, I'll empty it and pour in the right amount based on weight.
For a general tranny oil recommendation, the Neo 75W-90HD is popular here, as well as Royal Purple and Redline. Run a search for 'tranny neo' and you should hit the threads that have discussed it.

Here's a couple that might help
As dgeesaman suggested, be sure to use grease on the ball of the shifter and at that bottom bushing. Then fill with fluid. I think the grease is often overlooked and might even be the source of some of the complaints about stiff/rough shifting. FWIW, I'm running Redline MTL right now, but intend on changing over to NEO soon.

thanks guys... I appreciate the info. I know Redline and Neo are prolly the best, but is there any law to using like a Mobil 1 75W-90 or a more common brand? My car is not modded to heck, so I figured I could just grab some for a common auto store... if not, I have no problem ordering some from Mazdatrix either... just wondering.

No, there is no law against using something from a local auto store. I use Royal Purple, mostly because NAPA carries it and they are a few minutes from my house.
As long as it's the correct weight, you'll be fine. If you do happen to go with Redline, make sure to get MT-90, not MTL (MTL is too thin).

Edit: I have MT-90 in my transmission.. but can make someone a good deal on the MTL on the shelf in my garage, which is why I mistakenly mentioned it earlier. Sorry for adding some confusion.

I honestly don't think it would be too big of a deal to run the MTL (as I've known people to use it). However, I doubt it will last as long as the heavier oils so the MTL users would be changing it more frequently. I would also recommend the heavier stuff for those guys who track their cars.

thanks guys... I did not know that NAPA carries Royal Purple. In that case, I will just go there and get some. I'll return the Valvoline 75W-90 that I got, and get some Royal Purple.
thanks for all the help guys... I appreciate it.

hey Mahjik, I tried calling our local NAPA stores here, and they don't carry Royal Purple. I checked the NAPA website and they don't have it either. Who else carries it? (national auto store...)

I'm shocked your local NAPA doesn't have Royal Purple, but I guess they really don't sell a lot of it. I picked up some 20w50 for the track last year and the bottles had about 2 inches of dust on them.
