Hey.... I have my motor all back together and am installing the new lightweight flywell and ATC S/S Clutch tonight then putting the tranny back on.... I got the old pilot bearing out and put the new one in and a new seal. Do I need to lube it up or do I just put on the new flywheel and clutch and put the tranny on there?

Anything I should know? (yes... this is the first time I've ever done this )

yes put grease on the bearing. also make sure that the throwout bearing slides easily, and all the obvious moving points are greased

Ok so this might be a stuipd question.... but umm.... what kind of grease? I mean... I have used WD-40 to lube stuff but I'm guessing that as in grease... I need somthing different? I guess I could prob go to checker and they would get me somthing....

No, don't use WD40 that will wash out brg. Use a heavier consitency eg wheel brg. grease. The grease should be "kneeded" into the bearing. Place grease into the bearing, exert pressure onto grease to push into little needle brgs, and remove excess. As stated above lube where fork rides on throw out brg and also front of trans where throw out brg would slide...A small amount.

 

If you have a grease gun that would work great for this. For bearings( i could be wrong) i heard it was better to use lithium grease. Please correct me if im wrong though.

 

If I recall correctly, the shop manual calls for molybdenum sulfide based grease for the pilot bearing. Don't quote me on that though...best to check the manual. I seem to recall that it does in fact specify what type of grease to use.

 

you want something thick, like wheel bearing grease. just go and buy a tub, it works well for hinges and stuff

You are correct. Page J55 of the workshop manual specifically states to use molydbenum grease.

I've always used wheel bearing grease with no problems. Get a small wad on the end of your pinky, shove it in there, and work it into the bearing.

The shop manual shows the spots on the throwout bearing fork that needs to be lubed - the two "ears" of the fork, and also the part of the tranny the throwout bearing rides on. All with wheel bearing grease. Make sure those parts are clean and dry, then apply the grease. The TO bearing grease points don't need a lot, just a little more than a thin coat.
