she's alive

been about a year since i picked up my first FD. bought it with an assumed blown motor. haven't had the time to mess much, especially while keeping my other car track ready.

finally swapped some new plugs in, and i'll be damned, she started right up.

so yeah, this video is probably the opposite of exciting and entertaining (keeping with the theme of this thread) but can anyone tell me what they think? does this motor sound healthy?

http://vimeo.com/28356732

i started it while brushing my teeth before work today, so i haven't had time to mess with it since. can't wait to get off work to go mess with it some more.

-Ben

ps- i believe this car has been sitting since 2003.

actually i did replace the gas and fuel filter.

i'm wondering if the smoke is from sitting for so long or if maybe it's a blown coolant seal, not sure... i gotta pull it out of the garage when i get home.

well, got home with very little daylight left, and my headlights are disconnected. loosely threw my intercooler piping back on and took her for a spin around the block. didn't really boost hard or anything, i could hear a whistle coming from the left side. probably would be best if i tightened everything. lots of smoke/steam coming from the passenger side, around the turbos or somewhere down there (hard to tell). not sure if it's just burning **** off from sitting for so long, although i did take it around the block, thrice, then parked it in my garage and it was still smoking/steaming for a few minutes after i shut it off.

how many miles are on this car?
that is typically a bad sign of needing a turbo rebuild

It's hard to tell, maybe make a video of the smoke? How's the oil and coolant level?

not really a problem on the turbos, i have a new set of BNR stage 3's sitting on my desk.

to my knowledge it's the original factory motor, 83k miles on it. i'll check the fluid levels to see, but i don't think it ran long enough to make a noticeable difference. oil level was fine since i took ownership of the car.

i did make a video, not sure if it the steam/smoke showed up in it. really gotta do a compression test.

If you had steel seals they may have rusted to the housing. On first crank if you didnt gently hand turn it over before with some good oil you could have damaged a seal. Assuming it sat for a while.

well, it started fine last saturday (i've started it 5 or 6 times total), but then i went to start it monday and it won't start anymore. it feels like it is not getting any fuel. i also don't smell any fuel. it sounds like the fuel pump relay clicks when i turn the key to the on position, but i'm not sure if i can hear the fuel pump turning on. i checked all the under the hood fuses, and none of them are blown...

any thoughts?

thanks

If you suspect the fuel pump, start by pressuring the system and listening for the fuel pressure:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/how-troubleshoot-your-fuel-system-871361/

If you have pressure, you next need to check to see if your injectors are stuck or not.

Congrats on getting your car running again. Your symptoms sound similar to mine. Car sat for a few years, replaced, the plugs and it now smokes. Unfortunately after my compression test the front rotor read a little low on one face so its time for me to pull the motor.
