serious tranny problem, need help asap
okay, basically my tranny has quit functioning. it's had redline synth in it for over a year. my 5th gear synchro has been broken for over a year as well. the other day i was at the drag strip and it was having some problems going into reverse which was odd. the next day, while cruising down the interstate, it kept popping out of 5th gear for no reason whatsoever. i figured the synchro had finally done it's damage. just a minute ago i went to move the car so i could install my motor mounts and it wouldn't go into reverse. i could push the clutch in, and get it into ever gate except for reverse. it's almost like it was locked out. i pushed the car a few inches and shifted through all the gates again, and finally got it in there. i back into my carport and shift into what i think is neutral and let out on the clutch. the car dies. obviously it was still in reverse. i move the shifter around and finally get it into neutral. i try to put it into first and when i let out on the clutch, it just grinds like it's halfway in the gear.
sorry for the long story, but i need a solution asap cuz i have to have my car in good condition to go to the revolution in a couple weeks

sounds like a shift fork is eithe rbent or just about broken.. i wouldnt drive it to the revolution unless you either get it rebuilt or get another tranny.. if something is broken in there and it just happens to break apart your going to cause more problems then you started out with.. take it to a pro to get it looked at.
i just replaced the shift fork about 2 months ago and the clutch still has perfect feel when it's actually in gear.
any chance it's just the shifter bushing? if it helps, i have a b&m short shifter

It almost sounds like one of the springs maybe broken on one of your sliders (the rod on which the fork is attached). From what you describe, it is staying put instead of springing back to neutral when you position your shifter to the other gear slots (1st-2nd, 3rd-4th). I'll look at the bible tonight to see what may be wrong.
i was thinking shift fork as well, obviously the 5th/rev. shift fork since you are having problems with both 5th and reverse.
my first gen tranny has a problem staying in third. with enough vibrations, it'll pop out of third. it just slides into third, no notchy feel to it.

kicking out of 5th is generally a garfed up nylon bushing in the groove of the shifterball that interfaces w the pin attached to the trans housing.
not being able to get it into reverse is a function of a messed up 5th gear synco.
that trans needs a rebuild and you need to buy a trans shifter rebuild kit. call ray crowe at malloy mazda.
rebuild on the trans about 5-600. or buy a used trans for about the same px.

Sounds like a clutch fork to me. Mine just broke last week.
Symptoms are as follows:
If the car is running and when you press the clutch down you can't put it in gear - its the clutch fork.
If you can put it in gear fine when the car is off, but you can't put it in gear while it is running - its the clutch fork.
if the clutch fork is not totally broken yet, you might be able to shift, but it will be harder than normal to get into gear. when it finally breaks, the above symptoms apply.

my bad, i meant i replaced the clutch fork, not shift fork.
if the 5th gear/rev problem coincides together, how do you explain the 1st gear prob?
i was thinking of replacing the nylon bushing under the shifter and seeing if that helps, but i have to have it running and working in 2 weeks tops. if that fails, does anyone know where i can get a replacement tranny kinda cheap and quickly?

the rx7 does not have the same problems as the miata with the detent spring and not getting out of reverse does it? my miata will get stuck in reverse about once a year. 4 superceded part # for the spring and the same prob. howard souds on the money
i haven't had any problems other than 5th gear grind from the synchro until i went to the track the other day. it was fine, then i let my friend drive it. he missed 3rd both times he drove it. then i got back in it and discovered that reverse was sticking. it just started downhill from there
if the bottom line is you must have it up in time to make it to the show, i'd just try and find a used one and pop it in. Then you can have your current tranny rebuilt and beefed up and just have it waiting. this is also why i don't let anyone drive my car.
that's what i'm going to do, is try to find a used one. i don't have the time to get one rebuilt. i'll tear mine down at a later date and keep it for a backup. i am picky about who drives my car and he's never had a problem with it before, but i think he was trying to shift it a lot faster than it wanted to be shifted
As long as you are removing the transmission, why don't you try a couple of things that may identify the problem. Who knows, maybe they can be fixed while it is still on the vehicle.
If you drain the tranny oil and remove the bottom plate, you can see the workings of the transmission. I would check to see if the spring on the 5th/rev. slider is in properly. If the spring is broke you are not going to be able to fix it on the vehicle. However, if the clip that holds the spring has dislodged somehow you may be able to work a new clip into place. I would also pull the shifter boot assembly inside the car to see if the roll pin that connects the shift control rod to the shifter has broken or become dislodged. That could be replaced while the tranny is still in the vehicle. I am not saying it is going to be easy or that these are likely solutions or that this even seems logical, but you're the one that wants to get her running again.
Overall, it sounds as though you are due for a rebuild and I suspect, beyond the 5th gear synchro, you have sheared off a roll pin in the shifter assembly somewhere that prevents things from lining up correctly to execute shifts. A bent shift control arm or bent/broken fork is also possible.
As for fstrnyou, your 3rd/4th slider detent has become worn, thus the reason it does not notch into place and thus the reason it pops out of 3rd with vibration.

well i just got done installing my motor mounts and gave it another shot. i got it in first okay, drove down the road, got into some power and it popped out. it goes in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fine. i can get it in reverse, but it's really hard to get back out of it. when i'm just barely accelerating in gear, the shifter move forward about an inch and makes a slight grinding noise. when i let off and coast, it goes back to normal position and no noise.
i found a low mileage jdm tranny for $850 shipped that i think i'm going to get. it has a 90 day warranty. i was hoping the shifter bushing was just worn and not letting it engage fully, but i think the tranny has just seen it's last day

isnt it funny how things break when you really dont want them to. Same thing happened with my damn motor. I Still have a small chance to have the car ready for the revolution.
this happened to me when my tranny was totally destroyed by my man handling. Would not go in reverse. I had like 3 bad gears, 3 bad syncros, bad bearings etc. The trans had 100k on it and was abused by previous owners im sure. They dont last forver, no matter what kind oil ya use. Time to break it open.
it's still driveable, but i'm not going to take it to the revo like this. i'm ordering the new one tomorrow and rippin the old one apart for all new parts eventually. i just got done washin and waxin her so she knows i still love her! lol bad timing, but what can ya do?
hmm, i think im having the same problems.. right now, my car has 68k miles, original tranny.. the owner before me said he put synthetic (dont know what brand) into the tranny like last winter..
now all my gears are fine, nothing pops out, 5th gear is good, reverse works BUT.....
at startup, maybe after like 5 mins of warming up, i roll down my driveway in neutral.. im ready to leave, i try to put it into first and it seems like its blocked.. i try to force it a bit and i hear a thump, kinda like somthing you would hear with rubber and metal or something.. anyway, i try 2nd, nothing, 3rd, nothing, 4th and 5th and even reverse and nothing, like it was blocked from all of it..i waited for a couple of more minutes, i waited til the engine hit like 180F and i try first again, it goes in but kinda hard, like you can hear a CHICKK!! sound...it wasnt that loud but i heard it from the inside..i got worried and put it back to neutral, then i put it into second, then first and it went in smooth..for a 5 min trip, first was kinda hard to get into, so i did the 2nd (first), then 1st so it can go in smooth..after like 10-15 min, everything was normal..
so is that kinda normal? is something wearing? the tranny is stock but the owner before me is a mechanic and he said he's been using synthetic for the past couple of years..
should i use a special type of gear oil? im gonna ask him what kind he was using, im gonna change it anyway but i need some suggestions on what to use.. i want the best please!!
thanks, o and sorry for the long post, i didnt want to make another thread and this thread relates to my problem.

^^was that to me or the original poster?
cause its def not the clutch, i mean i know if theres air in the lines or not, o and btw, i have a ACT stage 2 clutch if that makes a difference..
im thinking its some kinda of bushing or i need better gear oil..
