one of the ****** magazines (turbo and hi tech perf, sport compact car, one of the primedia ones) had the amemiya rx-7 on the cover... in the article on it, mentioned it had a hewland 6sp sequential gearbox... i have it laying around somewhere...
Quaife makes a 6-speed SMG that can fit the 7. It costs about 6 grand. I asked. It uses the clutch for downshifting which is very cool because I just hate the absence of a clutch pedal.

The HKS is not a true sequential. It's what's referred to as a dog box, as is the GURU. Essentially it uses dog engagement gears with no synchros. Both are H pattern. Hewland has two versions, one is good for 450ft. lbs of torque, the other is 650ft.lbs I believe. Either would "work" but not without a custom bell housing, clutch setup, etc..It'd be BIG $$$. If anyone was at MADS, the rotary powered Miata that was there used the Hewland box. He quoted me $15K out the door, ready to bolt into the FD. If you do a bit of research and some of the work yourself, you could probably knock $3-5K off that price. The transmission is also MUCH shorter (Hewland) which would come in handy for anyone wanting to install a 20B further back and wouldn't want to have the shifter moved back as well. Oh, the HKS box requires a FULL teardown every 3500 miles and there are no facilities to do this in the US.
Other things to consider with a sequential:
- Most of the OEM implementations use logic in the ECU to sync revs on upshift/downshift. You would need to rev match manually if you don't also add an ECU that is capable of controlling the engine/transmission interaction.
- The clutch would also need to be controlled for launches, stops, and shifts
- The Ferrari implementation (maybe they have done away with this now?) uses a small lever where the gear shift would normally be to select reverse, so there may be something there to consider
- This may add a fair amount of weight to the car, as there is a fair amount of extra parts to this setup, e.g.- solenoids to control the shifting
- The Toyota Mr. 2 now has this as an option, but it sounds like a cheap version
