Seeking advice on Mazda Reman

No sooner did I get my new '99 spec twins installed and the plastic neck on my stock rad broke, the engine overheated and an engine cooling seal failed.

I've replaced the rad with a new, full alum model and my mazda Reman from Ray at Malloy is on the way.

I need some advice from those of you who have installed the Mazda reman SB. I've searched the postings and it apears these units come with a new t-stat and water pump. True?

I installed new vac tubing, new pulsation damper, fuel filter, plugs, wires and cleaned and flowed my stck injectors when I intalled the new turbos. I installed Damon's man boost control setup as well. I will install a new clutch assy when I swap the SB.

I'm seeking advice on what else I should anticipate replacing during the swap and what else I could do to improve reliability. I intend to crank the boost up to 11-12 psi. and will be installing a WB 02 and a PFC with datalogit.

My powertrain mods are pretty mild:
efini y pipe
ARC intake
Mazdacomp SMIC
Greddy elbow
Full hard piping on intake and pressure
Knightsport dual pipe DP
N2 dual Cat back
Defi Boost and EGT guages

Yes.

I would do SS OMP lines. If you didn't replace all your coolant and fuel lines, I would replace all those (and the fuel hose kit).

I think you mean Mazdacomp Rad.. The best advice is exactly what Mahjik gave you look no further and go with that. I am wondering why if you live in Seattle did you not take you motor to Pineapple instead of buying a Reman?

Well...I did a lot of searching on the forum here and looked hard at both Pineapple and Atkins as well as doing the rebuild myself. In the end it seemed the best bang for the buck for a stock SB was the deal from Ray. Ray tells me his latest crop of remans look as good as his (no longer available) new engines.

If I were going for serious HP I'd have probably gone to Pineapple. Tough choice though because Atkins is only 30 mins away. Seems like with Atkins you either love 'em or hate 'em. I'm not looking to gamble. If I had decised to build it myself, i would have used an Atkins kit.

I did the fuel kit, fuel lines and all the coolant hoses when I did the twins. Where can I get the SS OMP lines at reasonable price and is there any trick to installing them versus the stock plastic tubes?

FYI What I am hearing & reading lately Mazda remans are a hit and miss as far as quality/attention to detail goes. Refer to this thread for examples https://www.rx7club.com/pineapple-racing-171/engine-building-thoughts-575631/

I was going to go with a reman and decided Pineapple was the way to go.... In the end my motor was garbage and got a reman. Rob tore it apart and did a street port. The thread above post #94 was my reman I think.

You live in the NW go to Pineapple (no tax)

What did Rob charge you to tear down and port your reman? How long did it take?

I've yet to talk to him about cost! I knew my motor was toast by looking at it with a borescope at work. The rear rotor tossed an apex seal and front housing water seal! When Rob tore the motor and saw the extent of the damage he recommended starting fresh with a Mazda reman.

As for how long- Not sure yet they still have my motor. When I dropped my motor off to him I was like #15 or maybe more in line for a rebuild. I dropped it off knowing it was going to be a wait, which I didn’t care! Normally his turnaround time is around 2 months.

Give them a call and ask him was it wait time is and a quote! I wouldn’t wait too long for a rebuild due to overheating, it’ll just give you more issues (corrosion). I’ve rebuilt two n/a motors which I was told was a bad water seal it ended being the iron seal groove was cracked.
