Secondary Turbo question

Alright guys… this may sound like a dumb question, forgive me if it is. As far as the secondary turbo goes on my FD, I know it kicks in at about 5200 rpm, right? Well, here's the deal, I don't really have any wide open road (and cop-free for that matter) to be able to keep it at WOT in 3rd. So I try to do it on the on-ramps to the highways… I can't do it for long since I'll probably lose my license if I get caught So, I am able to reach close to 6k rpm, but not really at WOT, maybe 1/2 WOT. Question is, am I suppose to feel a REALLY STRONG put-your-back-in-your-seat feeling when the secondaries kick in? I am checking my gauge, and I think I am at 8 psi which is normal. I'm just guessing I don't feel a really strong jerk because I am "gradually" accelerating, and not really flooring it. I have to let up the throttle since I am already speeding waaaaaaay too much I hope nothing is wrong with the secondaries… Thanks for your help in advance.

What are your mods?

If you are stock and your turbo systems are functioning properly, then here is what you should see when you floor it in 3rd:
- You should reach 10psi before 3000rpm.
- At 4500rpm your boost should drop to about 8psi and you should notice an increase in the car's power. This is called the transition, where the boost from the secondary turbo kicks in.
- You should reach 10psi again at about 5500rpm.

Mods are KN filter, dp, and catback... basic 3. I thought the transition should happen at around 5k rpm? The drop down to 8 psi should actually feel like it's losing power for just a split second, and then stay at 10 psi all the way to redline right?

Again, based on my initial thread, I don't really have the luxury of WOT

You're only going to reach full boost under WOT.

At transition you should feel the power increase. Take a look at these dyno charts, there is a power spike around 4500rpm.

These cars are more modified than yours, but the rules apply to anyone still running sequentially.

Hey Jonski:

What are the mods on the car in the first graph. That is some really good lookin' power. The second one looks good, too.

If your sequential system is working properly, the transition won't really be much but a slight hesitation, if that, at WOT.

Unless you are at WOT, you won't be able to do a proper boost test.

You don't necessarily have to do the boost test in 3rd - 2nd gear works just fine too, it just goes by quicker .

You should be able to fully test 3rd gear on the interstate. That's where I've done 3rd gear tuning in the past - run the car through 3rd, change settings, repeat. Does look funny seeing a car going from 35 to 80 over and over again - I tune at night when the interstate is pretty dead.

Those graphs aren't from my car. I just did a search for dyno sheets and plucked two that were running sequentially.

thanks guys... yes, there is a slight hesitation at transition. I just need to find a clear open back road. I gotta get some ***** and actually go to WOT. That car still scares me. I guess my sequentials are running good then... after all, there are only 35k on the engine and turbos...

Someday I'll try to get more mods in... when the $ is right

thanks again for the help.

Mahjik, based on your response, EVEN at WOT, there is but only a slight hesitation? Alright guys, I just got back from a short drive, and actually floored it this time on the ramp in 3rd gear (was going ~100 by the time let up) all the way till 6k rpm. I didn't really feel a "throw my back to the seat" kind of feeling... but it was still pulling. I also looked at my boost gauge, and I saw 11-8-11 for a pattern... so if anything, showing those patterns on the gauge means that the secondary is working right???

Yep. The transition has really be blown out of proportion over the years. If the sequential system is working properly, it's only a slight hesitation, if that. It's more noticeable on a dyno chart than actually driving the car.

Sounds like you car is performing just fine.
