Second fan doesn't come on

I just bought a 1993 RX7, love driving it. I have one issue though. If I'm under load, like going up a hill, or getting into the throttle, etc, the engine runs in the upper half of the temperature range, approaching, but not hitting the white line below the red line on the water temp gauge. Upon stoping the car, I found that the second fan has not started, even though the car is above midline on the temp gauge. If I turn the ac on, the second fan starts, so I know the fan works. Ideas on where to look for the solution to this problem?
Thanks,

I hope your gauge is linearized...search on that word and you'll learn what I'm talking about.

turn the fan by hand and see if it kicks on...fan motor is probably toast. I really hope you didn't over heat the engine...watch for coolant level dropping.

Since the fans work with the AC on, the fans are not the problem. I suggest that you check the fans relays located on the passenger side, under the hood. First, make sure they are all plugged in all the way. If loose, that could be your problem.

ah...I didn't read the entire post. you have a relay problem. the slow and med speed relay's are suspect since the fans come on HIGH.
