searched: hot start idle with RA seals

i have searched and found this issue before and the problem is this. when i drive the car for a while and i park it, then when i start in in 30 minutes or less, the idle will jump around from 600-1000. the other problems were from the pipes heatsoaking and hot air being in the pipes. thats my case also because when i hit the gas hard, it gets better. i am only wondering because i have those RA seals that had 2 reports of failure and i was worried if its that or the same thing. i have 4k miles on the motor and the other people lose compression at 10k miles. cold start had good compression but hot start was like a blown motor (well, it was)......... please put my mind at rest to this problem!!!

You can't do anything but wait and see if they fail. If they do then send them back and get your $. I would then do a rebuild with stock Mazda 2mm seals. Don't jump to any conclusions yet though...

I've got over 10k on my rebuild with the RA seals and don't have hot start issues.

jspecracer, arent you the guy that has over 10k on a single with those seals?

question: were your seals numbered by having the numbers dotted or pressed in?

yea, i was thinking of that too but its not a everytime occuring problem, only when its hot.....

well, i guess the problem also is that i have a remote start on my car and i start it when its hot... it jumps around and i can hear it from the outside when i come to sit in the car.

Yes. That's me. Actually, the seals that are in my motor now were number with what looks like a scribe The new ones I have (obviously not in any motor) have numbered dots

so would you say the ones with the numbered dot's look ok and are they the ones without the problem??

also, when did you order your's?

To be honest, I haven't really looked at them. The set I have in my car now I purchased probably July/August 03 and installed them Oct 03. They've been in the car ever since. I purchased the dotted ones as a "spare" set in May of this year (I'm still expecting them to blow :P)

I'm expecting them to blow because that's the luck of jspecracer7.... With my luck I'll get a tank of bad gas, forget to fill up my WI, run the tank dry and then do a quarter mile run...etc.

hot starts can be caused by a lot of different things

leaky injectors

taking out the solenoids (fuel evap system)

intake temp senor

and some other things that are harder to diagnose.

Sounds like you had fuel build up.

After a couple for revs the symptoms go away

btw i've used RA seals. Dotted style with np so far.

I would agree with Sesshoumaru,

The stock set up has a sub-system to address this type of problem using the solenoid connected to the fuel pressure regulator to boost the pressure during hot restarts. You might be able to isolate the problem. If you open the hood when you shut down it should cool the outer parts first and not the parts deep in the engine, like the rotors and seals. If the problem is intake type heat soak it might just stop all together or lessen a great deal. If it were deep in the engine it would far less likely to be effected much with in that time period. Just my opinion and a easy test to start with. One could cool off intake parts one at a time to see which is the biggest offender with a spray bottle of water etc. I always do a long cool down and when possible open the hood surely every time I park at home.

I thought that you were against RA's seals?



I have run them for about 4k now with no problems.

yea, i tired it with the hood open and it stops it. i was just paranoid because of the thread of these seals failing.... btw, the intake temp sensor is under the intake manifold facing up right? i bought the scoot CF hood and i think that should really help it out??

I didn't use them in an engine that i owned Just built one with them for another person.

I guess I wasn't against them so much, just playing the devils advocate.

I'm usually pessimistic. I tried being optimistic but i didn't think it would work

The thing i liked most about them was the fact the owner pinged twice and they lived.

They also had pretty good compression on used housings on start up.

I have an extra engine or two and will kick around the RA seals on one of my own pretty soon.
