SEARCHED - Fan Mod ?
I searched for an answer and couldnt find one.... thus, here is my post.
Recently did the Disney fan mod and I have an interesting side effect I would like to correct.
My car is a 93 and has the wiring update. For the fan mod, I chose to splice the 2 wires together and run them to a single switch SPST so when activated, they run at medium speed.
The side effect is this: every time the car gets any type of electrical power, the fans come on (even if the switch is off). Since the fan mod is supposed to provide grounding for the 2 relays, it would stand to reason that if the fans come on whenever there is electrical load, that it is grounded somewhere else. This did NOT occur before I spliced into the 2 wires and routed them to the switch in the cabin.
After some use, I figured out that if i flip the switch for 2 minutes, then the car leaves the fans on for 10 minutes after the engine is shut off. This seems to be different than the 30 seconds that everyone else seems to be advertising.
Any ideas on how to get this to work properly? I don't want to burn out my fan motor.
Thanks for the help,
Steve

I have a brand new(never installed) Miata Thermosensor for sale. I don't need it because I have a datalogit and don't need to install the Thermosensor anymore.
Anyone want to buy it from me? $40 shipped.

revsteve,
I did the normal easy fan mod (grounding the wire) and it didn't do squat on my car. I ended up doing the Miata Thermoswitch and I like that so much better (granted, the original mod never worked so I like it better than stock ).
If you have the time, IMO, the Miata Thermoswitch is a better solution unless you have a programmable ECU which can control the fans.

Some help would be great.

I found that with the wiring update on my 93, I could not set up the mod to run the fans on medium unless relays 2 & 4 were already activated before I grounded relay 3 (thanx to fdjunkie for this tip). Also, remember that grounding relay 3 tells the ECU that the engine coolant is very hot, thus activating the 10 minute fan sequence if you don't shut down the mod 2 minutes before engine shutdown (this sounds like the reason your fans begin running the moment you turn the key, despite the fan mod switch position-- you probably have an incorrect relay grounded). My best suggestion would be to try and compare the wiring you have to the FSM, and see which wires do not correlate. Then positively identify the relays, which will help you correctly splice and ground the proper ones.
