seal failure? im a complete newb!

hi i am a complete newb to the rx7's never worked on one and never really got to drive on to be honest....

i am in the market for a new car and like with any car you have rumors as to what goes bad on the car....

i have always loved the FD body style, and the interiors. and really appriciated the small displacement and alot of power these cars could produce.

but anyways i alwyas here about the engines "seals" going bad and the motor is very unreliable and tempermental...so if anyone could tell me about problems with "seals" or any other prblems common with the car please tell me! thank you ahead of time for your time!

The rotary engine is reliable, if the owner is reliable. If you do periodic maintainence (oil change every 2.5-3k miles, coolant flush every 6months, etc), it will be just as reliable as any other engine. The engines fail when the OWNER fails -- to complete a task. They are not keen to being mal-maintained.

The "seals" you hear of are most likely the apex seals. www.hotstuffworks.com has a nice little article on How Rotary Engine's Work.

Seal failure is normally a result of overheating caused by the undersize stock radiator, and the stock overheat thermoswitch having too high a setting.

These are corrected by what is called reliability mods:
(1) bigger all aluminum rad
(2) FC thermoswitch with 207F set point
(3) fan mod switch (manual way to turn fans on)
(4) PFC with fan temp points set lower (86C, 86C, 88C)
(5) non stock DP with thermo wrap and ceramic coated
(6) bigger IC
