SCCA Solo II Car Classes: Street Prepared

What is the most I can do to my car and be competitive in Street Prepared Category class for the 93+ RX-7 in SCCA racing?

I just lost an apex seal and planning a whole car rebuild but want a car that's legal in solo II class. I would like to get my car ready so I am the one to blame for all the last place finishes.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

Looking at the Sacramento Solo events. Any body from Sac know how many Rx-7 compete?

it would helpful to know what mods you have right now. there's a lot you can do but it does not take very many modifications to be competitive in ASP. it does take great driving though.

check out the sacramento page to see how many rx-7s have been competing lately: http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/Sacramento/index.html

Jeff,
Your are already out of spec for the ASP class with the mods you list. Here are the ones that are not allowed:

Profect B Boost Controller
CF vented hood

As far as the engine goes, if I remember right you can port as long as the port doesn't extend past 1" from the orginal hole.

Here are some simple rules for Turbo cars in ASP

Turbo's and Turbo controls = don't touch
Exhaust = Free
Intake = Free
Ignition = Free
Suspension = Free
Wheels = free
Tires = DOT and SCCA approved
Making any new holes in body = Don't touch
Radiator = Stock only, including AST
Seats = Free as long as full size
Steering Wheel = Free
Interior trim = Have to keep all of it
Rear View mirror = Has to stay in stock mounting point
Gearing = Has to stay stock

If you have anymore questions just drop me an e-mail or post here

Hope this helps,
Dan

Dan,

I can control boost with pills no problem, Can you move the rad for a front mount IC? or just stock mount? I see alwan16 is running an after market rad is this O.K.? I have a buyer for the hood so that's cool. What about ECU? What did you do to get a smaller steering wheel in place I hear the Mazda hub is out of production.

Thanks, Jeff

aftermarket radiators are illegal in asp...don't ask me why...but I'm using one anyways since my stock on broke. i think ecu's are a gray area that are generally frowned upon. chadwick is right that you can change the ignition timing and fuel curves but no modification to the boost curves so do the m2 or pettit ecu do that? i'm not completely clear on that but i'm using it anyways.

you can buy a mazdaspeed steering wheel adapter hub from corksport to adapt an aftermarket steering wheel easily. i just ordered one. i think others might work but not as "plug n play".

my take on autocrossing is that as long as you're not planning on winning national championships or regionals just do what you want to your car. have fun and modify the car you want to. too much of it just depends on driving and i doubt anyone in the sacramento region will care about your pettit ecu or aftermarket radiator unless you're seriously kicking their asses

good luck.

Jeff,
Make sure you use the stock pills, if you enlarge or reduce them that would be illegal. But...like alwan said, if you are just going to race local you probably will not have to worry about it. Two of the guys I race against local are illegal, but I'm not really worried about it. If I can't beat them with driving skill, then I wouldn't have chance at the Nationals.

Better competition makes me a better driver!

Now on to the ECU, if you go by the letter of the rules, any currently offered ECU is illegal. All of the ones I have checked into, M2, Pettit, XS, PFC, PFS.... ether move the fuel cut as it relates to boost, or remove it all together. The rules are very specific in that you are not allowed to use a computer that ether directly modifies boost, or defeats the fuel cut. On the ECU topic, I would offer this piece of advise, don't ask, don't tell.

I personally have gone back to a stock ECU until I find someone that can reprogram it to just adjust fuel and timing without changing the fuel cut or boost.

Chadwick,

How do you keep your motor from leaning out and POP without an ECU? You have a full exhaust and intake. I just don't see how a car can last without better cooling and fuel?

Thanks for all the help with the SCCA thing, it just seems a little RX-7 unfriendly to me. I can't buy a real race car so i'm out for a little fun in the RX.

Later, Jeff

Hmm, overheating is not a problem auto crossing, you have to remember that you drive like a bat out of hell for oh... a minute or so .

As far as leaning out. Most courses are first and second gear which takes some concern away. Then you add a RRFPR and upgraded fuel pump to make life a little easier. If you were pulling 3rd gear or higher it would be a real problem even with a RRFPR and fuel pump.

I'm lucking in that I only use my car for Autocross.

FWIW, I seem to recall reading in Sportscar magazine that removal of factory installed airbags is going to be against the rules in "street" classes. I'd hate to see anyone get to the point of a divisional or national meet and get tossed because nobody at the local level felt the need to protest something like that. I do agree with the posts about doing what you want to your car and enjoy it. Try this attitude, the only thing that REALLY matters is FTD's. If you can capture Fast Time of Day, it doesn't matter what class you are in!!! Once you are confident enough in your skills, THEN build a specific car for a specific class.
