Is it safe to run downpipe and hi-flow?
Guys/gals, I recently had a hose job and injector rebuild done. Turned out my main cat is clogged. My only mod. is an HKS downpipe. I looked at a new Mazda main cat. and they cost over $1000!!!! WTF??!!! I need a new cat. and was thinking about a Bonez Hi-flow but I'm aftaid I will run lean....any comments or suggestions? Ofcourse I could get a piggyback or PFC, but those are currently out of my range for now. Thanks.

Check your local laws regarding emissions equiptment. I know here in NY they have to extend the warranty to 10 year/100K miles (I think... maybe 6/60). I'm sure CA has something similar.

I think your concern is going to be boost spikes. Get a boost guage with it.
BTW: I think it's illegal to install them, but you can buy used cats on ebay for pretty cheap.

If you are asking about smog-law safety: The Bonez hi-flow is smog legal, and will pass the visual. The DP will not pass the visual.
If safety for your car...depends on your mods, u need to make sure ur ECU is up to the task.

You shouldnt boost spike with only a dp and high flow cat, especially if you have the stock cat back. Like previously stated, make sure you get some sort of ecu upgrade before throwing more than 2 mods on.

here is another option you can do which i plan to do in the very near future, just get a midpipe and use restrictor plates to control the boost, just get them made at your local fabrication shop out of gasgets or some very thick metal. that should do the trick. ill keep you updated when i do it. goodluck
BTW: f*ck the emmision test, blowing flames is sooooo much cooler!!!

Thanks for the replies guys..I think I'm planning on buying a used main cat from forum members here. I also put up an ad on the partstrader.com. To be on the safe side, I think I'll go with a stock main. cat.

Here I just found this:
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/warr95fs.txt
Looks like it's a federal law and the coverage is 8/80 on all 1995 and newer cars.

Alright well now you guys have me worried.
I bought by 94 with a blown motor for a good deal...
I am having Dave at KD rotary rebuild the engine, plus a little bit of street porting action to go along with it. Add to that the M2 intake and downpipe I'm going to put on it...
So do I need to be WORRIED about running to lean, or can I get away with it just don't add any more mods until I get a remapped ECU?
I have some time to think about this issue, I just want to be ultra safe!
TIA

Hmm, intake, DP & streetport.. your pushing it, but if Dave is doing it I'm sure he'd tell you if you really needed an ECU. Just make sure an ECU is your very next mod.

Yeah that's what I was thinking... I'm just being **** retentive on this project. But then again aren't we all (on this board at least)!
;-)
My biggest nightmare, is that I get everything back together in the car, and like the thermostat sticks or something like that and the engine over heat's and pukes! or detenates

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
Mathew, just keep the boost at 10 psi with the streetport, dp, intake setup, and you will be fine. turn up the boost and youll be pushin it.
make your next mod an ECU.
