Question ?s about my new FD

I just got a 94 rx7. It has the spoiler and lip like a R2 but it has single oil cooler, sunroof and tan leather seats? It has greddy Ti exhasut, HKS intake HKS DP, Pettit ECU and some other mods. Anyway the first day I bring it home I pop the hood and see the DP glowing red after light driving. I have done some searches and it think it may be a clogged cat. So it brings me to my first ? is it safe to run a MP w/ the Pettit ECU. Also the car idles at about 1500 rpm and at idle the vacuum is at about 16 or 17. Does that sound right?

ALL the Pettit ECU's that I have seen have a map for a full exhaust(dp-mp-cb) and at least an intake system...

not all Pettit ECU are like that I think. Some of them are taylor to the customer specification. At least that's what I understood from the old limited ECU's

The Pettit ECU only has one map. The only difference is the fuel cut limit (between Limited 14.7 PSI and Unlimited).

Thanx for the speedy responds. Yeah I dont know what is with the idle. When I cruise at 2.5k and put it in neutral it will hang at around 2k until i give a tap on the gas.

You shouldn't have a problem if you add a midpipe.I had the same problem, my idle was at about 1200rpm, but if i lowered it the car would want to turn off.I think you might need a better ecu.I think i had that problem because i also had a large street port and i needed a better ecu like a stand alone.

its a touring model most likely - its more likely that the previous owner added a lip than took away an oil cooler :P

The idle is definetly high for a stock motor, my streetported motor doesnt even idle that high - but putting a mp and new ecu in could fix the idle problem.

Yeah im pretty sure its a touring. It says special edition by the VIN on the passenger door? I dont think the motor is ported because it was rebuilt by the mazda dealer :P (less then 10k) I am going to do a tune up this weekend. I think there may be a vacuum leak too because it sounds like there is one near the TB area.

the high idle could be several things
#1 cause of high idle Vacuum leak. Check all your vacuum hoses and check or replace the easy to get to gaskets (UIM to LIM / IAC / AWS / TB to UIM)

#2 adjust your Air idle screw (under the throttle body)

#3 make sure your Throttle position sensor is not out of wack.

The glowing DP could JUST be the result of the fast idle. Fix that before you worry about the pre-cat (stock DP). If you have more symptoms after fixing the idle - still glowing after light driving, low boost, etc., then worry about clogged cats.

Installing a midpipe will likely result in bad spiking and boost creep. You don't even have a boost controller yet. The main cat rarely fails unless the pre-cat takes it out or you are running way too rich for a significant period of time (or your airpump isn't working).

If it truly has failed, I would install a hi-flow cat instead of a midpipe at your modding stage and familiarity with the car.

Ok guys I went to put some new gaskets on and I found out that the top right stud on the TB is stripped...badly stripped. So now I have to either get a new TB.

Grab the stud with vice grips and turn it out. Then replace with new stud.

Most likely you aren't going to fine an "exact" stud anywhere but the dealer (I've already tried before).

You have 2 options:

1. Go to Westlake/Ace Hardware. Get a bolt that will thread into the TB and then cut to fit as a stud.

2. Just remove all the other studs and use bolts to hold it instead.

Ok so it runs and I got the TB all cleared up but now it has a loopy/surging idle. It will go up like 200-300 rpms then it goes back down over and over again...its really annoying.

mine does the same thing...sorry im not tryin to steal your thread, but my car idles high too...i think the guages might be off a little too though...i had aftermarket ones installed and i think they fucked it up...my car reads like 2k-2500 at idle. i have a 3" DP and a 3" cat-back...could it be idling high because of that?? the car only has 40k miles on it...and the high idle only started once i put the exhaust on there...
