Rx8 6 speed into FD
I guess the subject line says it all. Can this be done? Anyone know the cost of a gearbox from Mazda, assuming you can even order an entire gearbox :-)
Cheers

built my own engine
yes, though the rx8 six speed won't hold more than 400hp from what i've read....
i think mazdatrix already tried it...not sure
it has too many moving parts to handle the horsepower

I doubt Mazdatrix has tried it - they just got their RX-8 not too long ago .
It DOES use the same engine to tranny bolt pattern. Everything else - length, shifter placement, driveshaft compatibility, mounting - that's a whole 'nuther deal.
It's a nice pie in the sky thing to hope for, but availability on that gearbox is VERY low, if at all, and prices would be through the roof. Not worth it for an extra gear.
Hopefully it shares a lot in common with the Type R gearbox Mazda used on the FC and FD - that's a strong damn tranny.

And where do you get to use 5th gear in the powerband? I shifted into 5th at 140 and it bogged!!!! 6 speeds= useless waste of money! Too much hype on the 8 already geeezz!!

Yeah, its pretty pointless... But remember when you ask: "can it be done"... yes it can be done but for mondo cash... try searching for the "6-Speed FD" thread... maybe you should take Resource up on his deal of 2k for a 6speed tranny...

six speeds are a joke.
you just have to do more work because i guarantee you the gearing is different. A perfect example are mitsu 3000gt vr4s... my 92 had a 5 speed, and my 95 had a 6 speed. Very small noticeable change on high end, but a helluva a lot of more work shifting....

6 Speed is not essential but I need to fix up my tranny some time soon. It seams the rx8 box is out of the question, if it doesn't bold pretty much straight in I'm not really interested (it's my only car so any gearbox change would have to be done quickly). I don't like the rx7 5 speed much, it seams too slow to change. Is there some way to make the synchros more effective?
